RIP Deshaun Watson's achilles

tbh, I'm not sure this is going to be a rebuild. Someone, whether coach/gm/owner, was pushing for him to play even tho he needed to be benched. They aren't going to cut him with that contract. There's a solid chance he's playing sometime next year.

Its a different injury, but he tore his acl when he was a freshman. He recovered fairly quickly (actually played a game with it torn) and played great the next year. So he's shown in the past he can recover fairly quickly.

I wouldn't be surprised if they draft a qb tho and try to build him up for a few seasons. Then cut Deshaun when he only has a few years left.
That man is far from being a freshman, and a torn ACL is a very different injury from a non-contact Achilles tear. I'm thinking Teddy Bridgewater with the Vikings kind of injury where he was out for 19 months. He can be cut after the 2025 season with a lesser impact on the cap, which I have to imagine is the route they go.

His cap hit is still huge over the next few seasons. He most likely isn't being cut with the $86 mil dead money hit. Not to say its impossible that they cut him. The broncos took a $85 mil dead money hit when they released Russell Wilson.

An achilles injury is obviously very severe, but the Teddy injury was way worse. He may not be a freshman anymore, but he's also still fairly young at 29. He probably wont start the year, but he'll probably be back at some point, even if he isn't close to 100%

There's a way to restructure the deal after the 2025 season to lower the dead cap hit, and with the overall cap increasing every year, it'll be minimized further. Either way, he won't be suiting up for Cleveland again. I'd be surprised if he suits up for anyone at this point. Cleveland gains nothing by ever starting him again, coming off a major injury he will likely be even worse than he already is, and he can't even win games now. Not sure who the starter will be next season, but I can't see a scenario where they're worse than Watson has already been this year.

Exactly. Getting a journeyman and/or mid-level pick and then focusing on management

Trade deadline hasn't passed. At this point I bet a 6th round with contingency kickers would get Trey Lance to CLE to finish out the season and see if he is worth an extension. Dallas would love to get anything back for him and CLE could say they got a "steal of a deal on a former top pick".

They picked up Zappe Fever. He was a W KY Hilltopper, drafted by the patriots, cut, then picked up by KC and on the practice squad. He got some time in the QB room with Mahomes.

I think this kid has game. This could be a break for the Browns.

LOL. Zappe fucking sucked

I got the name messed up...it was Bailey Zappe. I don't think he has played in the NFL yet. His last year in college he threw for 5900 yards, 62 TDs, 11 INTs.

He played for the Pats last year when Mac Jones became a head case. He was just as bad. To be fair, the pats were using a DC at OC. But if you're banking on Zappe, then you're fucked.

Time will tell.

Defense and RB are there, no clue what the OL looks like.

OL is pretty good, but getting older so more injuries are happening and depth is an issue. Like they started this season with both starting tackles out for the first month+.

Infuriating because instead of wasting so much cap space and draft picks on a turd like Watson, they could have shored up those areas and been really good by now.

Isn't that "special cream treat" what got Watson to Cleveland to begin with?
Naw, that's just what put him on the path to suspension and the end of his career. Cleveland has its own particular bad juju when it comes to football mediocrity and terrible front office decisions about QBs in particular.

Unlike the older days, younger QBs had a couple of years to develop. Not nowadays. Ask Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold if experience helps.

I too would be extremely surprised to ever see him play again. He clearly was not the same QB and add an Achilles injury on top, he won't be near as mobile which was his strength. The reward is not there for taking the risk of signing a predator and getting bad exposure.
