In the top of the eighth, with a runner on first and one out, Horacio Pina took the mound for the Rangers. Scheinblum cut the Rangers lead to one with an RBI double. Otis tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the eighth, Tom Burgmeier took the mound for the Royals. Pinch hitter Larry Biittner gave the Rangers the lead back with an RBI single. A walk to Maddox loaded the bases with one out. Nelson came up with a big RBI single. Howard followed with a two-run single. With runners at first and second and one out, Monty Montgomery took the mound for the Royals and got out of the inning but the Rangers had put up a four spot.
The Rangers used a 13-hit attack to pick up their first win.
Final score: Texas 8 Kansas City 4.
