SEC Media days

It's a given the SEC and B1G are not going to add by subtraction because no one is taking less money to add schools.

I think the big question is really at what point do the SEC and B1G grow the inventory where airing all the games becomes problematic? ESPN pushing back on paying for a 9 game SEC season has been an interesting development because I thought that was a no-brainer but ESPN doesn't want to pay for the extra game. Now ESPN is cutting expenses and I'm sure that has a lot to do with it at this present time because I think 3 years ago it happens with no problem. That is the reason the SEC didn't go to 9 games because the league wants to get paid for that additional game and at this point I think ESPN figures they have the cream and would be buying 2nd tier games for 1st tier money.

Disney is exploring selling ESPN altogether or spinning it off completely and if that were to happen it makes the next contract really interesting because who knows who would have control of ESPN or what they're financially able to offer? If ESPN at some point gets neutered then is there enough competition in the broadcasting market to fund big contracts? Chances are yes but nothing is guaranteed.
- It was reported that ESPN was not the reason for the 8 game schedule. They were prepared to pay for the extra games. Bama decided they didn't like the 3 they were getting, and when they paused it gave cover to enough bottom teams to delay it. The official line is that they want to see the new CFP pan out and see if teams with a couple losses get penalized. Everyone knows we will get to 3-6-6 at some point in time.

- ESPN is cutting expenses, not revenue of they can get it. The SEC going to 9 games isn't an expense. It's additional revenue for ESPN that they understand should be shared. So, cutting expenses makes no sense - adding the 9th game will drive net revenue, even once they share some with the SEC.

- The extra games wouldn't be 2nd tier games. They would be top tier games. a 3-6-6 schedule creates both more Tier 1 and 2 games ... they would get the additional Tier 1 games. Again, this is a net revenue gain for them, they aren't the problem.

- No one knows what ESPN is doing, but per reports, they aren't shopping it ... it's profitable. They did split it out into its own division so they can see how profitable it is.

I have an immense dislike of Josh Heupel. But he’s right.

Texas is just Texas. Always have been, always will be.

Fuck Saban too.

1. There have been exactly two votes in the past to go to a 9 game schedule and that was Auburn and Bama. You are correct that Bama is trying to leverage to get a easier draw on their 3 perms (which is ridiculous) but they aren't the only ones opposed and if you were paying attention the excuse a lot of teams are using is that they need to be paid (which is also BS they just want an easier path to bowl eligibility). I honestly think the league is letting that narrative play out because they do want more money for the 9th game and there is validity to that.

2. I'm not sure that 9th game does produce the revenue that would justify the math for ESPN. That 9th game each week in most cases would be less appealing game from a ratings standpoint and then there is the issue of where do you air it? The channel game slots are filling up and adding 9 more 3 1/2 hour games becomes tough logistically. You can throw them on ESPN+ but 95% of the population doesn't even know how to access that channel.

3. ESPN options are being explored and a potential sale for it and ABCas part of that:

ESPN is the only thing making them money.. Disney itself is in the red even with their Marvel movies department or it's StarWars studios..

yes ESPN is cutting it's fat.. usually that happens before a sale.. But whomever it goes to or if it stays under the Disney Umbrella, they are fine. People really getting worked up for some tv talking heads getting pink slips.. are the same ones that swear they don't watch anything other than the actual games on there.

Revenue is not what the sell would be about.

It’s about stock growth and future potential.

ESPN is in trouble due to cord cutting and their revenue is dropping. ABC is a legacy asset with very little growth potential. The future for ESPN will be in streaming if someone can figure that out but Disney doesn’t have the stomach for it. They’ve lost about 1.8 billion on Disney plus and are looking at another 1 billion write down to remove content.

They also own HULU which looks like in the future will be absorbed by Disney+.

Ironically the only streamer that is doing ok right now is Netflix and that is a recent development after they put in controls to stop password sharing and cut their production slates.

I would not be surprised if ESPN came up for sale if Prime and Apple didn’t make a run at it because the live sports could boost their numbers substantially and both have primary businesses and cash to pull it off.

The environment is just weird.

Says the Texas fan.

I know Tenny didin’t get swept by (4-8/5-7) Maryland, swept by Cal, and blown out twice by BYU. All within the past decade or so.

Tenny >>>>>>>> Texas.

stumbled on this

There's been industry speculation that Disney might sell ESPN; Iger stressed that Disney was committed to the business.

"Sports is an advertisers' dream, it lends itself to technology, and our position is very unique," he said. "We have a great brand, and want to stay in that business."

He'll dump both ABC and ESPN if he can a reasonable price.

Disney is also going to merge Disney+ and HULU into one streaming product hoping the combined product, combined customer base, and elimination of duplicate positions will make the streaming product profitable. Right now none of the streamers are doing that great with the exception of Netflix.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple or Prime end up with ESPN at some point.

OMG, we're gonna get KILLED this season

At least we match up reasonably well with Oklahoma
