Some interesting quotes here, but not surprising. Outside of ND, there simply aren't teams that would move the needle enough to justify going to 20 or higher. Also, I think a lot of the value that everyone is projecting in the future depends on the sport remaining national in nature. If the SEC and the B1G destroy everyone else, they might get all the money but there might be less of it. It's a quick read for those of you who read every word, and understand only a few:

“We’re positioned at 16 (teams) for a robust future,” an SEC athletic director told SDS. “The need just isn’t there.”

Potential future moves on the expansion front could change that “need,” two SEC sources say, but conference presidents believe the SEC is positioned well for the future growth of college football.

“I don’t see any (expansion) move as threatening to us,” an SEC source told SDS.

When asked if Notre Dame to the Big Ten would be a threatening move, the SEC source said, “Why? I’ll put our product vs. anyone’s product. So we’re going to just add schools to add schools? There’s no value in that.”

...

The reason is twofold: value and the desire to keep college football intact.

That value isn’t just monetary. As important as big number games (ratings) are for future media rights deals, SEC presidents believe the success of the product on the field — and the resulting exclusive nature of the product — has been the critical factor in booming growth over the past 2 decades.

...

The message was clear: college football is better with all involved.

“We talk about value all the time. Well, there’s great value in college football as a whole,” another SEC source said. “I don’t think any of us, in any conference, can ignore that. There’s too much empirical data that shows it.”

ACC will live until 2032 or so. That is when teams will talk about leaving in anticipation of the end of their contract. I also think B1G will stay at 16 unless Notre Dame moves which I don't see right now.

It is kind of ugly right now because the leagues just look off.

Pac12 looks funny without USC and UCLA

Big12 looks like a hodge-podge of teams that just cannot get into other leagues.

ACC has Louisville in it (that has been a problem for a while) and they don't even touch the coast.

yeah i don't get why the SEC would need to expand just to expand right now. Outside ND, no one really is going to add much value to their deal. I'm looking forward to seeing how the ratings come out once SC and UCLA have landed in the BiG.

the NBC deal expires soon doesn't it? I still expect them to pick a conference in the near future

I don't think the ACC stays stagnant until 2032; they wouldn't survive financially. There's really only two options (and most likely one will happen in the next 5 years). The ACC will expand (with a team like ND or someone in the B12/Pac12) or the few teams worth stealing in the ACC will get stolen. All it takes it one team pissed because they're not getting the same payday IE being able to compete at the same level financially - and the whole thing implodes. If Clemson or FSU decide enough is enough, I'm sure the SEC or B10 would take them in.

I don't think a team like Clemson is going to sit around making $60 million less than Rutgers every year for the next 10 years and I don't think the ACC has grounds to get the same kind of payday as the B10 and SEC have/will.

Yep. I don't see anyone moving in the ACC in the next 10 years. The GOR is going to do what it was place to do, keep teams in the conference

To be clear, the ACC GOR goes until 2034, I just listed 2032 because it seems like teams are announcing their attention to leave 2-3 years in advance. Just announcements of intention to leave causes scrambles like we are seeing with OU/Texas and UCLA/USC.

I expect announcements for ACC teams to leave would happen in early 2030s.

Bluebloods is Bluebloods

This has been about consolidation the bluebloods as anchors for media rights negotiations.

Notre Dame is the only blueblood remaining that's not in the Big 10 or SEC.
They are the crown jewel and neither will go further unless Notre Dame is part of the deal.

they only things I see happening is a possible ND move to the B!G highly unlikely and the Pac12/Big 12 might poach each other.

I heard the ACC buyout is 50 million until that TV contract is gone. - which is the REASON $EC is standing pat

and the SEC has teams from Texas + Missouri

and a debate could certainly be made that Louisiana and Arkansas are different brands of southern than the rest of the south

They won't keep up with SEC/BIG but will they go bankrupt? Not sure how they will not survive financially but I wouldn't be surprise if they try to add PAC schools if they convince ESPN to give out more money

Missouri and Texas (especially when you consider where the University of Missouri is located) do fit in the South. It isn't as much of a stretch as you think.

By that I mean, in this arms race they'll end up becoming second rate programs if they wait around for 10+ years to realign and get more money. If B10/SEC schools are getting $60-$70 million dollars more every single year over 10 years, do the math on that.

From what I read, there's no buyout unless the school can somehow negotiate a buyout. Pretty much if you leave, all of your home TV revenue goes to the ACC

Unless CFB economics change, there won't be a reason to take other teams. 10 years is a long time, and maybe the economics do change. But based on what they are now, it doesn't matter what the ACC does. Either they make enough to earn a piece of the pie, or they don't. For now, they don't.
