Small Rivalries that went away

One rivalry that I want to see created is Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech. It makes a lot of sense. Both schools are engineering/technical focused. Both are in the Smokey mountains and are only a couple of hours a part. It seems like a win-win.

an old aggie told me a story yesterday,
of when the aggie band used whistles
for their maneuvers,
and rice strategically placed some students
who blew their whistles just before the band directors did,
and crashed the aggie band -
i thought that was hilarious!
The hooters could get under the aggies skin more than anyone it seemed. Especially the marching owl band.

tOSU vs UoM

Used to be the greatest rivalry in college football -- if not all of sport -- until UoM decided to became a mediocre basketball school.

LSU vs Tulane went away, because Tulane fucking sucks.

Glad the "rivalry" with aTm is back.

Nebraska used to have a few in the B12 that are all but gone. I'd love a Nebraska vs OU game scheduled in the future
wouldnt that fall under This doesn't include rivalries destroyed by realignment.

@Deep Creek curious who is UTEP's greatest rival?
Only really have one. New Mexico State. Ultimate pillow fight.

Believe it or not, many moons ago, the old Border Athletic Conference consisted of:

Arizona
ASU
ASU Flagstaff (Northern Az)
New Mexico
New Mexico A&M (NMSU)
Texas Technological (Texas Tech)
Texas Mines (Texas Western then UTEP)
West Texas Teachers (West Texas State then West Texas A&M)
Hardin Simmons

El Paso was pretty much the geographic center of that conference. Boy how things have changed.

Conference realignment killed that one.

One in the Pac12 that I think is still played often is UCLS vs. San Diego State.

They played a few times when VT was in the ACC. It should be an annual game

North Carolina/South Carolina
Appalachian State/Western Carolina
Florida/Miami-FL
Syracuse/West Virginia
Louisville/Memphis

not really. they had a run of like 10 years in 80s to 90s. then 02-05 and then a couple 1 offs in 09 and 19 but the overall is 21-1 for UCLA so not really a rivalry

I would call that a small rivalry and say it fits the thread similar to the ones in the OP. I mean, I doubt Tide fans consider Southern Miss a rivalry but it seems like they played ALOT for a while there.

In the period that I described, they were in Conference USA. They had ranked teams some year (1999 for example). They were pretty competitive with Alabama in that period. It wouldn't make much sense today. I am just curious how it stated. Alabama played them continually for almost 15 straight seasons. Any Tide fans have any input?
The first CFB Game I attended in person was the 1971 Southern Miss (with Ray Guy) @ Alabama game in 60,000 seat Denny Stadium! That was the week after Alabama Upset @ Southern California to start the season.

My last game @ Tiger Stadium was the 1984 Tulane @ LSU Game! The one were LSU scored a late TD to run up the score, and a Tulane player started a fight on the extra point. The brawl caused the game to be ended with a little over 1:00 or so to go. lol. Both the LSU and Tulane Replay shows were a hoot with both sides blaming the other! Tulane started it, but LSU was running up the score (Like Mike the Tiger likes it!)

Cincy/Louisville/Memphis all had pretty solid rivalries with each other. it was hoops focused

I think Kentucky-Indiana still goes on occasionally in basketball (maybe every year?). Same thing with illinois - Mizzou.
Kentucky/Indiana don't play each other anymore. Calipari wanted to do neutral-site only, while Indiana wanted to do home/home. Indiana's buzzer beater win against that stacked UK team back in 2011/12 was the last time they had a regular season game.

another rivalry that Calipari kinda killed is UNC/UK. UNC is at least open to doing neutral site games, but not every year. Calipari is seemingly not a fan of home/home games with other powerhouse programs.

Illinois/Missouri play each other every year in a series called "bragging rights"

Ahh... Yeah, once I started getting more into hockey, CBB dropped a bit for me. Man. 8 years. That's too bad
