The popular kids are such jackasses. I mean with the recent season of Stranger Things, is anyone in school that cruel?

Also usually the popular kids were actually pretty nice and fun to hang around. It was always those kids that wanted to be popular and weren't that picked on nerds or kids that were different.

I guess it creates drama.

I think that Gilbert's speech maybe does kind of give us an answer in that you can market the idea to a wider group. Not everyone knows what it feels like to be popular and widely liked/praised but most of us have at least had a moment when we felt like an outcast. Except for The Fonz of course, he is just off of the spectrum

Possible or it maybe the fact that most actors/drama people are typically not popular in high school or sometimes even college but they are the ones that make movies as adults.

People see what they want to see.
Steve was a "popular kid" who is one of the gang.

I've witnessed a bunch of times in real life where a bully becomes popular through insecure people willingly submitting to (following & supporting) the bully to prevent from getting bullied themselves.

The worst case I ever witnessed of this was a time I took my son to baseball practice when he was about seven. It was in a small park. I was playing with my daughter in the playground and observed a group of kids (about 14 years old) interact. The biggest kid (height and weight) was the worst bully I've ever seen and he had a crew of four awkward minions with him doing whatever he wanted. There was also a girl at the playground the bully knew somehow. There was another awkward boy there too who clearly had an interest in the girl, but the bully and his minions proceeded to harass, torment and physically abuse the solo boy. The girl submitted to and sided with the bully, too, for what appeared to be her own self preservation.

The physical altercations amongst the kids became a danger to my daughter's safety, so I tried to shoo the kids out of the park, but the bully was so emboldened that he actually challenged me too. Rather than escalating the situation worse, I just removed my daughter from the area and continued to monitor the situation in case it got far enough where police involvement might be appropriate. Thankfully the kids left the park shortly thereafter and I was able to allow my daughter to play again.

Mouthy aggressive kid is a terrible situation. If he was beating on the smaller kid and you try to break it up you may end up hurting him and then you're the one getting cuffed. But you can't just let it happen.

Most of the bullies at my school were beat regular by their dads and I guess they felt the need to take it out on someone else. Also hardly any supervision. First ones to drink, first ones to say fuck, first ones to do drugs, first ones to steal.

There was this one family where the dad would come home drunk and make his sons fight each other for his entertainment, if they refused he'd fight them.
