You gotta honor your contractual obligation. Things can be negotiated but in the current era of college sports the remaining teams would be foolish to leave tens of millions on the table to allow the departing schools an easy break. Taking personal bias out of the equation if I were the new Big 12 commissioner I'd give OU and Texas a offer that favored the conference and if they didn't take it I'd force them to stay until 2025. It's not about being difficult to work with, its about leverage and money. If they want to pay up to get out early, cool. If they don't want to or can't cool as well. I'd also backchannel the SEC and ESPN to see how much they would be willing to pitch in for an early release and maybe money talks there as well.

I agree totally. Cut a deal if we can and leave early but if we can't then shut up and make the best of it. The conference needs the money so I understand leadership trying to get what it can. What I think is ridiculous is the people who argue that the conference is not going to take a hell of a hit losing its highest profile schools. I would really, really like to see Oklahoma State in the SEC at some point although it might take years to accomplish that and more tectonic movements in CFB. Joining the SEC is like pledging a popular fraternity house. Ya gotta be invited and then go through the initiation to make it. Life is going to get harder for OU in the SEC, no doubt about it. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be a money grab and we can somehow improve enough to earn our fair share of SEC football championships. Life is going to get harder for Oklahoma State too trying to keep up with the competition while making less money but, again, winning trumps everything. But whatever happens, we need to keep Bedlam.

Still, it's really fascinating to see this. Good work. I want to spend some time looking through this. Current 5 makes sense to me. But for the new guys moving from G5 to P5 it tells you where we are.

Let's cut to the bottom line. Oklahoma has run roughshod through the Big XII for years without a hint of playing any defense. We only failed to win the conference last season because Muleshoe decided to mail it in and OU still went 11-2. More evidence of the conference not being particularly strong is its consistent champion got boat raced every time in the playoff. Yes, teams in the conference won their fair share of bowl games but I'm skeptical that bowls are really a good measuring stick now since so many of the best players no longer play in them. I'm a devoted OU fan but I'm a realist. OU has been a big dog against generally weak competition with a Ferrari offense and a Yugo defense. Taking OU out of the conference is not going to help its strength by adding who? Cincinnati, BYU, Houston and UCF? LMAO OU would have beat the hell out of those teams over the past four years. The only program that is "up there" right now is Oklahoma State. Baylor might be OK some years but don't bet on them long term. Verdict: The Big XII will end up being a G5+ conference most years.

I'm not convinced that last year's OU team beats Cincy. They looked terrible for much of the season.

Who knows? Depends a lot on where it would have been played. Also if Muleshoe wasn't playing with one of the staff girls that week or on Zillow house hunting when he should have been thinking about his (highly paid) job. Caleb Williams was a heaving crap shoot all season playing absolutely horrendously some games. But they kept pulling wins out of their ass until they hit some harder competition at the very end of the season so I'd put it 50/50 they would have beat Cincinnati last season. But my point still holds: OU would have pounded the 4 new teams coming into the conference over the past few years. That isn't bragging.....it's just a fact.

meh maybe. it wasnt that long ago that Oklahoma lost to Houston. and yes im aware of the more recent match up Oklahoma won, against one of the worst Houston teams in recent years.
raises the question would they have had as easy of a time with an 11-3 Cinci or 10-3 ucf that year?
last year Oklahoma beat Tulane and Nebraska by 5 and 7 points respectively. Tulane was a 2-10 team and Nebraska 3-9. Doesnt really give me confidence that Oklahoma would have pounded any of the 4. beat, probable.

In my opinion, Oklahoma is going to be still dominant in the years they are loaded with talent (up years) in the SEC. The biggest different that Oklahoma will notice is the years that they are down. Oklahoma had some down years but still went 10-3 in Big12 and won the league. Those struggling Oklahoma teams will be 5-7, 6-6, or 7-5 in the SEC and not 10-3. The 11-1 great Oklahoma teams, will still be 11-1 or 10-2 at worse. You cannot hide weakness in the SEC (or it is difficult).
Oklahoma has a big fat question mark on it right now with Riley leaving and Venerables taking over. It is a mystery as to why Venerables will be successfully or not.
