I was born on Allentown. Grandfather worked his whole life at Bethlehem Steel. He took (slightly) early retirement right around when this song came out. A little before that we moved to Florida from there. These lyrics speak a lot to all of that time

Allentown was dying, and was pretty dead for a while...but it’s been on the bounce back for a decade or two now, at least relative to what I remember from visiting as a kid.
