Still no ESPN......negotiations......WTF

Gotta say this was an extreme power move by Disney. I heard there was a brief warning about potential blackouts if DirecTV doesn't pony up, but then right before CFB and NFL starts up they just yank the plug. Bravo.

I also have a special hatred for DirecTV because years ago I had them and they pissed me off, but mostly because they allowed Bally Sports to exist as long as they did. Had DirecTV joined everyone else telling Bally to fuck off, we all would have been watching regional sports channels for the last few years. But everyone said no to the scheme, then DirecTV/ATT saw that they could corner the market and took it. Fuck em in the ass.
I ditched Direct TV years ago because my satellite got off due to a storm and they wanted to charge me $150 to realign it and I told them to F off. I've been streaming for over 5 years and don't miss cable but with all the subscriptions plus high-speed internet, I'm not sure I save anything.

I'm shocked the NFL hasn't laid down the law to Disney because they exactly that when they got into a pissing contest with Spectrum last year and there was a settlement within days.

Truth is Disney really has no reason to settle with Direct TV unless they are forced to because people are just going to move to someone that does carry their stations and a chunk will sign up for HULU which is a double win for them.

Didn't Disney just sign the new contract with them? I'm sure they know exactly what they can and can't do, and the NFL does as well. Could the NFL ask them to get eyeballs on the games? Sure. But at the end of the day I don't think the NFL wants to mess with their largest content delivery partner, especially when there are already judicial eyes on the NFL over price fixing around the Sunday Ticket stuff.

Anybody thinking about cutting the cable/satellite cord, just know the 'tv' portion of your bills are going to continue increasing as more and more people actually do cut the cord.
Somebody's got to make up that revenue loss and that somebody is you.

The costs of streaming is held in check because it's competitive. You can change streaming services from month to month.
Whereas cable tv is a monopoly, and satellite tv basically is too, unless you want to change out antennas and boxes. Not to mention you're stuck in one year contracts with them, otherwise if you're month to month they really stick it in your ass.

I'm out in rural America and there are 3 different satellite dishes (and an old aerial) on my roof from the previous owner. They look like hell, but the roof's in good shape so I won't have them removed until I get reroofed here in a few years.

My local cable company is fiber, but I don't use their tv service because it's also a monopoly. I only use their high speed internet. I have my own wi-fi modem (Walmart) to run multiple devices in my house. I don't need a separate fucking decoder box for every tv that's already a smart tv with internet access.

Maybe cable/satellite tv will eventually start getting cost competitive with streaming services, but it's not gonna be anytime soon. Because they don't have to as long as the die-hards keep footing the bill.
YTTV is up to about $90-ish now, it started at $60.

That said, when I add all my subscriptions up it's no more than what I had with cable and I sure do get a lot more content:

YTTV
Amazon (would get that for Prime anyway)
Netflix
HBO Max
Hulu
Starz
Britbox
Acorn
Paramount+
Apple
Disney
Peacock

and maybe a few others I am not thinking about. Some of those are free with other subscriptions (Prime Video, 247 Sports, new Apple purchases, etc).

Tangent time, but there was a story in the last year or two about a guy who has cell phone plans that he never uses. He did the math and it was cheaper for him to buy cheap phones and put cell phone plans on them to get all the other free stuff than it was to buy the subscriptions. I'll have to see if I can find it, pretty interesting.

Also, if you have Disney and Hulu then I hope you have that bundle which would mean you have ESPN+ too. Probably do and just one of those you mentioned you weren't thinking about. But if not, $$$ savings.

Still no contract agreement, so I'm going down the list of games and seeing whats on ABC, CBS, Fox, FS1, BTN, etc, so forth and so on.

Of course the Oklahoma game is on ESPN, so I guess I'll tune in the radio like it's the 1960's all over again.

Remember when they told us we’d have flying cars in the future and it turns out they can’t even figure out how to give us ESPN.

You didn't hear? Oklahoma cancelled their season

Just get a $25 digital antenna at Walmart and you're set for college football on FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC, and CW, all day long.
Be ready to take it back if you’re insulated.

I had to get an external and mount it on my SW peak.

Shit was clearer than cable at that point.

I signed up for the free 10 Day trial with Fubo. Fubo has Bally Sports so I can get the Braves. If DirecTV gets Disney contract sorted in the next 8 days I can cancel, otherwise I will switch on over.

It's cheaper for the channels I want anyway.

No good games on espn or abc today anyway

My only bitch about DIRECTV stream is I signed up for $65 and now it’s $110. I want to switch to Hulu but the wife likes a couple channels that Hulu doesn’t have.

My wife and I were driving our youngest daughter to the gym this morning and my wife mentioned the Jetsons and our daughter said she had no idea what that was.

We have failed as parents.
Damn right on the failure. I was at the Camel/Ostrich races in Virginia City, Nevada yesterday. I ain't shittin'. Look them up.) I told my wife the younger generations had no idea the significance of Virginia City because none of them know about Bonanza!

Do camels and ostriches race each other?

Or is this one of them segregated race deals?

My money’s on the camel if there’s jockeys.

You ever heard of an ostrich jockey?

I didn’t fucking think so.

For real. Seriously. Fuck them. I cannot believe they threw Bally Sports a lifeline.

segregated. They've got saddle like contraptions on the camels...but some of the riders still fell off. They sit on the ostriches "bare back" or maybe "feather back" and several of their riders fell off. They also raced zebras. Starting gate is only three stalls and the race was only about 150 yards around one turn. Resembled more of a rodeo than a race at times.
