You are playing for something in the season. You are playing for a conference championship, you are playing for a national championship, you are playing to improve your draft stock.

Bowl games are meaningless for players who are essentially guaranteed 1st or 2nd day picks. He isn't raising his draft stock by playing in this game. He wins absolutely nothing by playing in this game, neither does the team, other than a trophy.

there’s no doubt many players take these bowl games seriously. But clearly many don’t. Hence the opt outs. It’s an exhibition. Regardless whether players treat it as such.
