Unlike other things state fairs tried to deep fry, funnel cakes have been popular in fairs and carnivals for a long time.
They usually only sell them with powdered sugar on top. But I was at a place that offered chocolate and strawberry toppings as well. The wife wanted to try the strawberry topping so we got that. Tasted all right but I was telling her this looks like we're eating someone's gutted intestines. After that, I had the rest of it to myself.

Just looked at a recipe, and it's not far off from waffle batter. Maybe more egg than I use in my waffle batter. Obvious difference is you fry funnel cake.
