I'd laugh if academic donations were protected with full tax-exempt status but athletic donations were restricted so only a modest amount of a contribution was tax-exempt. (That would stop the BS about setting up charities to pay football players.) When I first started giving to OU back in my bachelor days, I was a member of the Beef Club. You either gave a beef or a $1000 contribution. And it's been a financial hemorrhage ever sense. Now the rule is firm in our house: give a $1 to athletics and you'd better write a check for a corresponding amount to the academic side or my wife is going be raising hell. In fact, we have now actually given more to the academic side over time. If they mess this thing up too much by making all the players semi-pro athletes siphoning (in our opinion) too much money, we'll just shift more giving to the academic side. I love winning but I refuse to get milked by someone just because they can run fast, throw a ball or jump. I'd rather help the students staying home and not doing a lot of socializing and feeling bad they can't go do things like eating with their friends in the Student Union or at a restaurant......because all their money has to go for tuition, books and a place to live.
