Tennessee's Pruitt Fires D-Line Coach During KY Game

The question on Pruitt isn't Xs and Os, it's whether he can be a CEO of a top college football program. He's a great DC, but can he be a great HC? He can recruit, but can he keep his hotheadedness under control. He had some run-ins with Mark Richt that always made me wonder if he had the temperament. This move is evidence that he may not. Letting a DC go mid-season is bad enough, but seriously doing it during a game is ridiculous, absent some serious issues that haven't come to light yet. Not to mention, they have close to a million dollar buyout for the DL coach.

It's going to be interesting to see if he can keep it together. Last year he was able to. But all his losses so far are by a ton of points. You have Bama and Florida (please beat those reptiles), a much improved @ Arkansas, TAMU, @ Auburn, and Vanderbilt. Seriously, you could lose all those games with the likely exception of Vandy. That would be 3-7. 4-6 is more likely as you will may win one of Auburn or Arkansas. I think he can survive that, but it likely takes you out of contention for any prospects that are marginal - Neyland Green, Smael Mondon, TID - come to mind. I don't think that is hot seat material, but the talent margin will not get any better if recruiting suffers. You guys play UF, UGA, and Bama every year. Until your talent gets better, you start at 2-3 losses each year. Can he survive that?

I somewhat agree with you but TN can't afford to fire a coach now.

Tennessee's downfall has been poor coaching. I haven't really seen Tennessee with a great coach in my lifetime. Even Fulmer was mediocre and got outclassed by Spurrier and late Meyer, Richt, and Saban. Fulmer's secret weapon in the 1990s was David Cutcliffe. Our offenses declined after he left.

I kept hearing that we need to give coaches time like we gave Dooley 3 years and Jones 5 years but I don't see other SEC schools doing that nor having trouble finding good coaches. James Franklin won 9 games in year 2 at Vandy. Bobby Petrino, Hugh Freeze, and Dan Mullin all won quickly at programs with lesser talent.

If Pruitt doesn't win at least 4 games this year, they probably need to start searching for a coach. However, I don't have faith that the school can find a good one so I am fine with holding onto Pruitt for now. In a way, if we can get a good QB and shore up some issues with the O-line, we have a great football team.

Franklin is unlikely. He grew up in Pennsylvania as a major Penn State fan. Unless something is foul with the admin, he probably won't leave. Baylor's coach would be a good option (the one from last year) or Matt Campbell from Iowa State. @76cyclones, don't kill me.
Franklin was looking around last season, especially at SC but PSU was offering a lot more money.. he isn't as loyal to psu as you think

Right now it's Urban as the primary guy to replace Herman.. after that it drops off a cliff.. Franklin is probably #2 and that sucks because his time management bad

But Texas is not going to hire another G5 coach who's an "up and comer". They will hire someone who has several seasons experience at a P5 level. So no Fleck either
Urban is waiting for the ND job to open up IMO.

The Vols would kill to have somebody like Fullmer right now.

He runs Malzahn's offense with no tempo.
Malzahn has lived past his prime. You have to worry about a HC who seems to constantly be trying to fix his specialty. At that OT what does he bring to the table? When Strong lost the defense, I knew it was over

He's still talking to Texas right now

Which version of Fulmer? Certainly not the one at the end of his TN run

If Tommy Tubberville loses the senate race, he could be an option.
Tubberville isn’t going to lose.

I saw a tweet that quoted Malzahn over the last 7 years and the comments were almost identical in every year we are struggling:

- Young Team
- Injuries and need more depth
- Growing each day

At some point, you just have to accept responsibility that you aren't getting it done.

His bowl record is dismal IMO.
He is 0 -11 vs Alabama, Georgia and LSU for road games
2-7 vs Georgia (it would be 1-8 if not for the miracle in 2013)
28-25 verses SEC opponents in the last 53 games

^^^^That is not Auburn

I'm not sure financially getting rid of him is the right thing this year due to COVID issues and we can't discount that because let's face it money issues are a massive thing that people want to pretend aren't problems but that is reality. People that say there are boosters that will cut the checks are full of shit because people don't just cut 20 million dollar checks to get rid of a football coach anywhere so that's bullshit.

I knew when they signed him to the new contract (and very much opposed it) this is what would happen so it is what it is. If they fire him I will be ecstatic but I don't see it happening and honestly, I'm nervous it could be worse. Look at Tenn, FSU and Texas what they have been through with coaching blunders. This will pass and it will get fixed eventually and I'm lived through worse. I'd rather be an Auburn fan than a fan of anything else and that won't change.

But if he beats Bama.. he's safe right?

Mark Richt absolutely hates Pruitt and Mark Richt doesn’t hate anyone. Tells me all I need to know about the guy

I thought Urban was done with coaching. If he wasn't, why'd he leave Ohio State? Only a handful of jobs as good as that one...if that.

Because Ohio State suspended him for an unjust reason in his opinion. He believes he did nothing wrong. So he finished the season and walked out giving them the finger.

He's listening because he wants to win another Championship to cement his legacy. Be the first coach to lead 3 different schools to a championship.

Only real obstacle is his family. His daughters do not want him to return to coaching, rather spend more time at home with his grandchildren. But how do you turn down 5/100 mil?

lol

USC: "We fired a coach on the tarmac of the airport after a game."

Tennessee: "Hold our beer."
Texas fans are hoping Herman gets his walking papers before he hits the tunnel if he loses Saturday

The thing is I think that was the wrong move. Granted a lot of water is under the bridge but you would have a hard time convincing me that USC wouldn't be much better off today if Kiffin had stayed. I mean I type that and think it can't be right but I'm convinced that it is.

Kiffin wouldn't have done much different imo.. he needed that experience to get better.. he needed the FIU stop to figure things out. Big question is, should they have stuck with Orgeron instead of hiring Helton?

James Franklin leave State College for Texas or Tennessee?

why in the world would he do that???
