What those spewing the low hanging fruit regarding Nebraska not being in prime recruiting grounds is HOPE.
They HOPE Nebraska stays down thus reach for whatever they can to justify it in their minds.
With respect to me, one you have accused of picking low hanging fruit, you couldn't be more wrong. I want the good programs to be good again. I want NU, USC, TX, UCLA, UM, The U, FSU to get good again. It's good for college football, and while I am a fan of my team, I've been a fan of CFB for 50+ years. I always liked NU. I had the chance to sit and talk with Osborne for 30 minutes in the RDU airport a decade ago when he was here visiting Duke for something. What a great guy. I have good friends that live in NE who are die hard fans. So, no, I don't hope you stay terrible, I am just smart enough to understand why you are where you are today, even if you deny it.
What you keep dismissing as low hanging fruit is just a dismissal of the obvious. Since your good years, the game has changed and the where the best players has changed. It started with the desegregation of the sport all the way through to today where the huge bulk of the best players, especially on the LOS, are located in the south. Those players simply aren't going to go to the north or Midwest in numbers sufficient to enable you to compete at an elite level. The only hope you have is to find a coach who is so absolutely dynamic that he can somehow convince the best players to come play in Nebraska, that has been mediocre for 2 decades - their entire lifetime - instead of going to the teams in the south that are winning now. Because he won't get the best players, he is going to have to not only be dynamic, he has to be so good a coach that he can develop the 3 starts you get (currently your highest ranked player is 3* ranked 560). They have to develop them into 4 and 5* talent. That simply isn't going to happen on a consistent basis. And, if he is that good, he will get snatched up by better programs that have better access to the more fertile recruiting grounds.
You can call that low hanging fruit all you want ... but that's 20 years of history that says I am right. Frost was your best chance in a long time as he appeared to be that type of dynamic coach, plus he had ties that said he would stay. You guys should give him all the time he needs in the new free agency/NIL era of football to see what he can do. It will be hard for you to find someone better. The simple fact is that all the advantages you had don't exist any more:
- Scholarship limitations limit the players you have have on a team a redshirt (that set Bama back for a while, too).
- Hugh crowds - everyone has them now, the south as many if not more.
- Southern pipeline is shutdown, and can't see that re-opening.
- A lot of the rivalries you had (OU in particular) are gone with the move to the B1G
- Other than tOSU, what non-southern schools are flourishing? Whatever is causing that, you have to deal with it.
- No TV advantage by being a blue-blood ... everyone is on TV all the time.
I have no idea how one overcomes that. I hope you do. You are in good company.
