Texas Linebacker Jake Ehlinger found Dead

Yeah...too many Scarface wannabe's getting hold of pill presses.

Be careful out there...and smart.
Or better yet, just leave the illegal stuff alone. There are plenty of legal ways to get your rocks off that don't have the inherent danger of street drugs.

Yeah, he had no business doing street stuff. He and his family have the means to get him in a physician's office and get whatever he might need.

So yeah it would be better to leave the street stuff alone...but sometimes things aren't so cut and dried IRL.

I can see how easily it could happen. "Here, take a Xanax, no big deal". And no one tests for Xanax that I know of, so for athletes that a simple solution. Except when it is fake and costs you your life.

Yeah, that people can put that into anything and press a pill is scary.
I have a stepson that has mental issues. He also has drug issues.

Took me a while to figure out why he was abusing his Suboxone and taking Xanax as well. His mental issues were never addressed successfully....medicine made him feel worse than the condition. So he turned to street stuff to self-medicate which helped his mental condition as he would get r e a l fucked up...so fucked up he couldn't care about the bad shit bouncing around in his head.

Its very easy to say "You shouldn't do that", but addiction and mental issues are real. The more people that don't have access to insurance don't have access to any medical care.

I'm not sure if Jake had either...he could have just been wanting to have a good time on the sly. Kids gonna do stupid shit, sucks when it results in their death.

I hate to see this, heck I even hate injuries on either side.

Add to it so many people get prescribed pain pills, become dependent on them, prescription runs out, still have the pain, get sick from being off the pills, they turn to cheap heroin, and/or these fake street pills that are laced with fentanyl.

It's 2021, how about we start looking into making medication that isnt as addicting as these old time pain pills are, or maybe make it difficult to prescribe such pills, and also if prescribed these pills, your Doctor follows up with an exit plan to get you off them safely. Like here's your 5 day supply post surgery, and after that no more pills, but either wean them off the pain pills, or offer some sort of post-surgery therapy thing that doesnt include medicine. Basically something they try now to offer to people already addicted to the stuff. How about they offer that immediately post prescription just in case and to help prevent addiction starting in the first place.

My first hand experience after a back injury was that drugs like oxy do less to heal the pain and more to just get you wasted anyhow. Many times you're not just flirting with addiction but not getting much in return either.

Sounds a lot like my nephew but he abused alcohol to drown out the thoughts in his head. When he went into rehab to dry out his mental condition worsened because those thoughts snd feelings came back. He was ultimately diagnosed schizophrenic and is on the proper medication now.

That is great to hear.

There are a lot of people who need real help. Some folk never get help or never get adequate help.

I have my own issues but they pale in comparison to those with schizophrenia and bi-polar-like conditions.

I’m thankful my hay day was prior to all this ridiculousness going on, particularly as it relates to drugs being mixed unknowingly with fentanyl.

I mean I was in the Greek system at Arizona State when Sammy the Bull was in hiding and running arguably the largest ecstasy ring in the world while also supplying ASU’s campus with it. No way I would have made it out of that situation alive if this nonsense was occurring back then.

The worst thing the Reagan Administration ever did was shut down all the mental hospitals because "they cost too much to operate". Those people ended up on the streets (bad in itself) but it set a precedent that continues to today when 50 times the amount of people needing this kind of treatment are living on the streets.....hooked on illegal drugs......and living with their demons instead of getting professional care. I liked Reagan, hate taxes and don't trust the @#$% government. But on this issue Reagan blew it and I wouldn't mind my taxes going toward mental treatment instead of being whizzed off on tent cities, honey buckets stationed along the streets, a fortune being spent on emergency responses to overdoses, etc., etc. The conservatives (me) need to see the need for some money being spent the right way and the liberals need to stop wanting to whiz billions off on poverty programs that obviously don't work. Drugs are a scourge. There comes a time when we need to set politics aside and work together on this national problem so people like Jake Ehlinger get the treatment they need and go on to enjoy a normal life.

I'd also add that because it really doesn't address the actual injury and just masks the pain, it can actually lead to further injury or at least make the recovery process longer. Increasing the likelihood of addiction.

Agree. I think pretty much everyone agrees that homelessness is a huge issue and only getting worse. Bringing back the mental hospitals and getting folks real treatment would be a great start towards addressing it.

Addiction and mental illness are choices. Fix your shit and act right.

I highly doubt anyone choose mental illness. Not everyone has the means to pay for all the doctors appointments and prescriptions that it would take to find the right dosage and combinations. It’s like saying that people make the choice to have cancer or heart disease.
