that's the spirit.. safer than handing out keys to hell catsI put in for the non profit today to pay our local kids. I am going to recruit the shit out of players when this happens.
Because some are calling that compensation. And it has a lot to do with NIL money. If they didn't go to the school, the NIL money wouldn't exist, right? It would just be income. To pay for things. Like school. Why would they do that? Scholarships have NOTHING to do with NIL money. Are the schools sharing the TV contracts or stadium revenue with the players like the NFL or NBA does? Last time I checked, no.
well, until we start paying HS players -
lol sassy? Is this your first time here?Because some are calling that compensation. And it has a lot to do with NIL money. If they didn't go to the school, the NIL money wouldn't exist, right? It would just be income. To pay for things. Like school.
And no need to get sassy- i'm asking a question because i don't know the answer. For the record - I think the kids should get compensated for their likeness, but there should probably be a limit or some kind of fail-safe implemented for these little 19 year old idiots that have no idea how to balance a checkbook or how credit cards work. Put it into a trust or something. Of course, there will be some unscrupulous bastard that comes along and screws them out of it anyway, but some of these kids need to be protected from themselves.
If he's making 6 figures with NIL, then yeah, maybe.free education and NIL compensation are two different things.. My brother got a scholarship, yet he was still working in the evenings and weekends. Guess they should have pulled that too?
oh so you want to put limits.. let me guess if your son was a doogie howser md in the making and John Hopkins said come here and you are covered for everything.. then when he arrives and they say oh didn't know you have a 10 mil dollar trust fund..yeah we gonna need you to go ahead and pay for the right to be here..If he's making 6 figures with NIL, then yeah, maybe.
Wouldn't that have been disclosed prior to getting the scholarship? Not seeing how you're connecting these dots here. Please explain.oh so you want to put limits.. let me guess if your son was a doogie howser md in the making and John Hopkins said come here and you are covered for everything.. then when he arrives and they say oh didn't know you have a 10 mil dollar trust fund..yeah we gonna need you to go ahead and pay for the right to be here..
doesn't matter if they are making a billion dollars a year.. a scholarship to play there is still a scholarship.Wouldn't that have been disclosed prior to getting the scholarship? Not seeing how you're connecting these dots here. Please explain.
My observation was that if Student X is making money, hand over fist while reaping the benefits of attending a certain school, why does he/she need a scholarship? If they are making that kind of money, they can pay for their education with it, and more of that scholarship money could go to your brother, who can't hit a curve ball, dunk on his 7 foot classmates or throw a football straight as an arrow in subzero temps.
My "limits" comment is probably not accurate... if someone's willing to pay it, then that's no fault of the recipient. But I do think there should be strings attached. As in - financial counseling or putting it away (or a good portion of it) for the future. Kids are so stupid at that age. They don't think about tomorrow. Why is it wrong to want to try to protect them from themselves while they figure it out and don't ruin their future with impulsive, childish decisions? Isn't that what good parenting is about?
Save your energy. You know what's going on here with all this "charity" stuff? Texas believes they can use their financial power to buy/spend/manipulate their way back to the top. I've talked to Texas fans who work in our organization and they give one example after another where Texas will now have an advantage over everyone else because they're richer than 6" up a bull's ass. They are elated that Texas will be able to buy coaches, players, anything to get on a level the rest of us can only envy. Coaches making 8-9 figures and players making 6-7 figures are the future!! Common sense and long term consequences are irrelevant. Maybe they're right. But I doubt it because I can picture how the rest of college football will eventually react.
It does! That number is whenever each institution says "uncle" or "calf rope" and just folds their cards.Should CFB have a cap? lol
Codaxx, you know as well as I do the payoffs and handshake money were never as much as this NIL/Whatever stuff. It's a whole new world. "Back in the day" I saw players at OU getting envelopes with cash in them from the sale of Texas tickets that one of the assistants always held back each season for "contingencies". (Every player got the same amount regardless if he was an All-American or just on the squad.) I distinctly remember 3 of those guys hopping into my car one afternoon before we headed to Oklahoma City to go to Casa Bonita. There was $325 in each envelope and we were all whooping about it. Now it's what amount all these players are getting? Different world. Waaaay different and the influence on the game will be magnitudes greater.Just laughing at people that think players haven’t been getting paid. Walter Camp had $100,000 slush fund for player in the 1880. People freaking out, because this is now out and in the open is kind of funny. If you want to watch players that play for the love of them game, watch DIII football and go to DIII message boards. Oh wait, they don’t have those
you telling me Eric Dickerson wasn't getting more than any other SMU player in the 80's? Was the parking lot full of gold Trans Ams?!?!Codaxx, you know as well as I do the payoffs and handshake money were never as much as this NIL/Whatever stuff. It's a whole new world. I know of two players who got black Trans Ams at OU in the 1970's. A car was about as bad as it got for many, many years. Now the money's "above board" and it's in the hundreds of thousands and millions. Now tell me if it's the same as it's always been. Letting the players make some money is fine. But it's going to get out of hand and it will be corrosive. Mark my words.you telling me Eric Dickerson wasn't getting more than any other SMU player in the 80's? Why do you state the obvious as if it’s some revelation? Yes, money is going to change things. It’s still not ethical to keep principals from negotiating for and enjoying compensation for their abilities and work.I know of two players who got black Trans Ams at OU in the 1970's. I wrote: "Letting the players make some money is fine. But it's going to get out of hand and it will be corrosive." I have said repeatedly that the amount of money will be the most important issue, not letting the players get a piece of the pie. When players become little more than semi-pro mercenaries it will change a lot of things. Some of the changes will not be positive. I don't know how to make it any clearer. I'm out of this conversation because people keep twisting words to mean what their personal prejudices are. I think we both hope the game isn't messed up to the point neither of us recognize what up to now has been a fun sport. Have a good evening. Why do you state the obvious as if it’s some revelation? Money is bigger. That started when OU sued the NCAA. That was the first step to making College football a big business. A Call Girl and a Street Walker charge different rates, but they do the same thing.Codaxx, you know as well as I do the payoffs and handshake money were never as much as this NIL/Whatever stuff. I know what you wrote. It’s just the way it is. It will get out of hand. It will get corrosive. We will lose the character of the game:; maybe a lot.I wrote: "Letting the players make some money is fine. But it's going to get out of hand and it will be corrosive."
