The 1940 - 2010 MLB $150M Salary Cap Draft : CHAT

Lets discuss why Gary Sheffield doesn't get enough love around here. For Comparison, I've only included numbers from the ages of 23-37 where both players were active.

Number of seasons with over 100 Strikeouts: Zero
Number of season with more walks than strikeouts: 13
Number of Career Home Runs: 434
Number of Career Stolen Bases: 174
Number of Seasons batting over .300: 9
Number of seasons with an OPS > 1.000: 5
Number of seasons with over 100 RBI: 8
Number of seasons with over 30 HRs: 8

Compare that with Jeff Bagwell
Number of seasons with over 100 Strikeouts: 10
Number of season with more walks than strikeouts: 4
Number of Career Home Runs: 449
Number of Career Stolen Bases: 202
Number of Seasons batting over .300: 6
Number of seasons with an OPS > 1.000: 5
Number of seasons with over 100 RBI: 8
Number of seasons with over 30 HRs: 9

Without diving too deep into the numbers, I'll opine a bit.

Bagwell was always the clean image guy. He played for one team and was loved by fans, teammates and opponents his entire career. Though some opine that he must have been juicing, there's never been any concrete evidence that he did anything against the rules.

Contrast that with Sheffield. Constantly traded from one place to another. Generally not a great teammate and didn't have much respect from fans (especially Milwaukee) and cried and complained anytime anything didn't go his way. Named in the Mitchell report and admitted to using the cream (though claimed he had no knowledge of contents and that it didn't help him), as well as other possible evidence.

Bagwell was the face of his franchise, while Sheffield appeared to be run out of town as fast as his teams could get rid of him. Fair or not, those differences color media coverage during their careers, which also colors the recollections and opinions of fans.

I don't have to means to further delve into the numbers right now - so that's about all my two cents can buy.

Sheffield 30+ Home Runs 8 times in 22 seasons
Bagwell 30+ Home Runs 9 times in 15 seasons

Sheffield 100+ RBI 8 times in 22 seasons
Bagwell 100+ RBI 8 times in 15 seasons

But I think Stoke nailed it, Sheff wasn't a very well liked guy and then there's the juice.

Obviously Bagwell had more power, sans the juice, but Sheffield producing good power while avoiding a ton of strikeouts is impressive to me. It's a trait we definitely don't see now a days anymore. But I suppose this was prerequisite for good hitters back then.

Honestly, my criteria to be drafted most of the time is + power and lots of patience. 100 K's isn't so bad if there's also a 100 walks. Work the count and tire the pitcher out. If you aren't flirting with .400 OBP and 20-30 HRs, I'm probably not looking at you. Though, I usually get a guy who replaces power with speed to lead off - but he still better work the count.

More whining  you should come around to the NBA forum so more…ohh wait, everyone thinks you are a joke LOL
They are even bigger Dumbasses than you are. The big argument over there was those fools didn't believe Shaq would be dominant today(absurd) and that they said the reason the US lost 3 games at the Olympics was the level of talent being greater around the world, I said it's because of our selfish style of play and the fact that it means more to players from other countries. I stand by that. I didn't see Luka taking a knee
I understand your butthurt Shane. You've been playing these mocks religiously for years and you have just over half as many wins as I do. Maybe if I take off 5 years you might be able to catch up. Twit

I'm sorry to hear that bro. Its always hard for me to figure out what to say when someone else experiences loss, so just my thoughts are with you and I hope things turn up for the better.
Thanks. She just passed away. Shit isn't a joke

Damn, I'm sorry man. Thoughts with you and her family.
Thank you. Man I wasn't that close to her but my buddy was married to her 25 years. It's a terrible thing
