The electrical grid is being pushed to the limit with this cold system.

Turbines yes. But also other equipment in the grid, regardless of generation mode.

The downtime reason was a big reason we had something similar, but far less serious in impact and downtime decades ago in Florida.

If power generating companies are going to share power amongst themselves the HAVE to coordinate better on things like repairs and downtime. Granted, this was unprecedented demand, but if they aren’t going to coordinate for some form of contingency in their repair and upkeep efforts this can’t be avoided....certainly not this badly.

Yeah, this is a pretty large scale fuck up. Always with trying to do things bigger in TX...

Wells don't work unless you have electricity, so need a generator too.
I had a generator before I had a kitchen table when I first moved out of my parents house. When a storm goes though, it’s nothing to not have power for a week. Overhead lines, lot of trees, low priority area

They are allegedly doing rolling power outages here in Mississippi to take the pressure off the grid.

And my boss just had a water pipe burst in his attic. In the middle of a Zoom arbitration. He's afraid he's about to lose his whole kitchen.

Good excuse for a complete kitchen remodel.

are you on a fixed rate plan??? Electricity prices right now for variable rates are 9.00 kw/hr. in other words $450.00 per day.

This was strictly a fucking money maker for ERCOT and planned. Their board needs to be charged with MURDER

fuck i hope so. better double check

and naturally, the site is down.

Yeah, it's not a load issue...well it's become one but thats due to shortages.

Almost all of the state is on its own power grid. Secondly, we do not winterize our wind turbines because normally we don't get this kind of extreme cold. Finally, the state also uses the winter to take the time for repairs and maintenance on power plants to prepare for the huge demand in the hot summer months, so capacity is already lower.

Perfect storm as many turbines got frozen, other plants were offline, and the state is isolated.
I was just relating it to vegas. People here would no doubt die, if we had the cold you uys are getting, and I am sure many of thise factors would be similar here. There is ungodly amount see of power being used in the summer though.

If anything, this is an excellent advertisement for a massive Tesla battery plant in TX.

Just drizzling freezing rain now. Fingers crossed the power doesn't go out. Water pressure is down to just a trickle.

Pretty sure we will have to resort to cannibalism soon.

Batteries don't work all that well in sub-zero temps either.

from the sounds of it, the issue is that none of the plants or sources of energy are made to operate in these temperatures.

here we have heat trace and such keeping piping from freezing and they don't have that down there and that is causing the issues.

Winterizing, right?

That’s been the big thing I’ve read. It’s been considered cost prohibitive in the sun belt to spend so much for a once a decade thing.

Only, regardless of ones opinion on climate change....most of us agree the climate is changing and having a bit more extremes.

With that, and the pain these companies will continue to feel from this mess, I think you have to put these measures in place before the next one hits.
