No sir, I put in the OP you did not have to keep the same year or team, I wanted to make it easier to trade.
 
You can trade players but only if you have a team and year open you can assign them to. You do not have to use them for the same year and team the person you are trading with used them for.

Once you've made a selection you CANNOT change the year or the team.
