Things that go bump in the night…

First time I heard it years ago, I thought it was a woman screaming.
Had a tree stand right at the edge of a harvested cornfield one year. I was facing the woods, climbed up an hour or so before sunrise. Things got calmed down and I got my silent hearing attuned. Unbeknownst to me, a coyote set up about 50 yards behind me and cut lose. 'Bout pissed myself.

And I’m willing to bet that’s what most people around here are actually hearing when they think they heard a mountain lion. There are mountain lions around here, but not a significant population, you might see someone getting a picture of one on a trail camera once a year, but there’s plenty of foxes

Got woken up by this at about 2am last night.
First time you hear it, it'll send chills up yourn spine until you figure out what it is.

Yep. I've had city friends think they heard a mountain lion, but I tell them It's likely a fox. Not that a mountain lion has never been caught/shot in Omaha because they have. Just more likely a fox. I'm a good distance out of town and by a river, so I expect I'll get a mountain lion on a trail cam eventually. Lots of coyotes and foxes set the IR off at night.

Caveat, I’m an avid backpacker, and backpack both the Bankhead and Talladega National Forests regularly.

A friend of mine sent this to me. And I haven’t the foggiest what Alabama creature would be capable of that sound.

Howling
