First off, this is not my point of view. I am not smart enough to even think of this. I heard this on a podcast awhile back, around the time Texas and Oklahoma decided to go to the SEC, and the Big XII was going to be left as a dumpster fire. Would the new Big XII be considered a power 5 conference? The guy said, "Well, weren't all these teams in the Big XII good enough to be beat to have the conference champ go to the playoff (sometimes)? So, now, without these two teams, the conference is not considered power 5 (or will it be)? The same Oklahoma team that lost 8 bowl games since winning their national title against Florida State. The same Texas team that hasn't won the conference since 2009. Some of the remaining teams like Baylor, TCU, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State have won the conference, so it isn't just an Oklahoma and Texas conference. Will the new Big XII be a P5 conference?

Thoughts?

You might want to fact check what you just wrote if you really want some replies.

Some were conference co-champs. I did change the 2005 to 2009. I just went off what the youtube podcast had shown on the screen.

Did you know that Oklahoma has won the Big 12 more than all the other teams combined? Also since the Big 12 in bowl games OU has beaten Alabama, Auburn, Oregon, Florida, Iowa, Wasthington, etc.

Since 2000 Sooners are 11-11 in bowl games and they weren’t playing UTEP in the bluebonnet bowl most years.

P5 isn’t about quality of football or any athletic program. It is about how much revenue a team/conference can generate. And using revenue as the standard, only two “P5” conferences really exist.

I think the podcast guy was mainly saying that will losing these two teams reduce the Big XII to non power 5 status. I am looking at some of the things he had posted on the screen. Surely wrong.

I do agree there. This podcast was definitely posted before the whole UCLA and Southern Cal to the B1G.

I’m trying to figure out why it’s a story when 2 sentences could have expressed the thought. Without OU and Texas, even with the success of Baylor and Okie Jr, can the Big Xii sustain P5 status.

Okay. I expressed it in one sentence

When those two teams goes, the money goes. Without them the B12 is G5+ at best. With the addition of the G5 pissant teams coming in, they shouldn't even be G5+, just another pissant G5 conference.

I believe the P12 and ACC will be okay for awhile. B12, IMO will be a G5 football conf.
Should be kickass in bball tho. but who cares about bball?

I think the podcaster was trying to show possible reasons why Oklahoma and Texas going to the SEC wasn't the be all, end all for the Big XII. Now, if revenue is the thing, well that seals the deal.

I hate that because I do miss the old Big XII. Oklahoma/Nebraska, the Williams blitz and Lehman pick for the TD vs. Texas, Big XII title game where Suh pushed Texas around. I actually looked forward to all the old Big XII title games more than any other conference.

Boise St and UCF have beaten some of those teams and a few more.
Boise St has even beaten Oklahoma.

The question is have you been playing a G5 conference schedule the last 10 years or not?

I was thinking along these lines where some of the G5 teams have beaten some P5 teams (from whatever P5 conference). But then again, do they do this each and every season?

Sounds like you answered your own question.

Oklahoma doesn't do it each and every season, do they?

Even G5 Houston has beaten them in the last 5 years.

Oh my fault. I read that wrong. Got ya.

Big 12 is in a good position to be a viable conference that regularly sends team to an expanded playoff.
