tOfficial 24-25 NHL season thread

Torts out. Flyers are trash but hopefully now we can stop with the idea that he’s a good Coach
9 games left in the season and its been apparent for awhile there was no postseason. Management + ownership must truly not be able to stand what a prick he is, to do this now.

Race for the 8th seed in the east is ugly. Look at the last 10 and losing streaks

Jackets very much still in it lol

Yeah, Montreal's next three games are @CAR, @FLA, vFLA too.

One team in that group just has to win a game or two and none of them are doing it.

LOL at Utah leaving the valley just to have the same mediocre results

:finger:

Meh, this was planned to be a waste year. They moved the dead Weber contract. Hope they make a splash after the new branding.

Sooooo, uhhhh, Tampa has won every game since this post and Ottawa and Boston have both lost every game since this post. Detroit are the barnstormers of the bunch by winning two one goal games out of 5 in the same stretch.

We still not sure about Tampa making the playoffs or nah?

I don’t want the Rangers in the first round. That shit doesn’t end well a lot.

I have a feeling that the Habs will slide into the last spot in the East.

Of those six teams, the Rangers have the best goalie, the greatest potential scoring punch and the most playoff experience on the roster. They're probably the only team of the group that would have a realistic shot at a first round upset if they get in.

The Wings have a historically-bad PK (worst in the league; worse than 70%), are one of the worst in the league in 5-on-5 scoring differential and have the highest percentage of goals they scored on their power play in the league. Those details don't exactly translate to playoff wins - especially in the likely scenario that if they did secure that 8th spot they'd be playing the Caps - who have the most goals for at even strength in the NHL. Really the only shot the Wings would have at a first round series win would be if the Caps blow their discipline and continuously put the Wings on the PP while the Wings stay out of the box.

The reload is already done when Leonard signs.

And they won both games with FLA

That was a good start to securing that 8th spot.

Last night the Wings had a lead they blew with half a minute left in the game then lost in OT. And they have zero opponents left on their schedule who aren't currently holding a playoff spot with 5 of 8 on the road: vCAR, vFLA, @MON, @FLA, @TB, vDAL, @NJ, @TOR. They're toast.

Beating Florida without Matt and Ekblad with a rusty Marchy and Vanecek between the pipes isn’t really something to hang your hat on

But the Habs being in it with a goalie with a career 3.00+ GAA and sub .900 is hilarious.

The wildcard standings don't give a fuck about "how"; it's all about "how many".

Was a horrible game to watch the end of. Ovie nearly had another PP try, except there were only like 8 others on the bench.

He doesn't need to have the record to be the greatest goal scorer in NHL history. He already is and has been for a long time.

The year (81-82) Gretzky scored 92 goals in a season, Billy Smith was the Vezina Trophy winner. Billy Smith was a 5'10" 185 lb guy who posted a .898 save percentage and 2.97 goals against average that year as the BEST goalie in the NHL. In today's NHL, Billy Smith would be one of the smallest goalies in the league and those Vezina-winning stats would rank about 40th in today's NHL. 1982 Billy Smith ≈ 2025 Juuse Saros. When defenses got tighter and goalies got bigger & better in the 1990s, Gretzky averaged 27.3 goals per 82 games.

Here's the stat comparison between Gretzky and Ovechkin at ages 30-38:
