Wow... Hadn't seen THAT news yet. That's just so screwed up. GEEZ...
Yep. Some people were driven by the flames to a set of docks, and there was no where else to go.

I've been to 3 other islands but never Maui. That was going to be next on the list. Looks like it'll be a few more years now.

Pacifis???
My wife and I were just talking a few weeks ago that our next vacation would be Maui. We haven’t been there in a long time. I guess it’s going to be even longer now.

I'd seen news of Coast Guard and other boaters pulling people out of the water, but I hadn't seen news about bodies washing ashore.

That 'death toll' there is gonna be MUCH higher, unfortunately... SAD!

Was in Maui a few years ago. That area in Lahaina was so densely populated and overbuilt, it was kind of crazy. Every inch of property was houses, and built up, and close to each other. the area was pretty old too, and I think most of the buildings were "grandfathered" in.

I was talking to a deckhand on the fishing trip we went on, and he was telling me he lived in a house there, rented a bed, in a room he shared with another person, and there were 18 people living in a 2800sqft house. Sad part is, many people lived there like that as no one can make enough money to live there on a normal job. I am sure the number of deaths is going to go up tremendously.

That sucks. I'm sure developers are going to try to snatch up as much of that land as possible now

Kinda weird in that this was like the opposite of a Tsunami, where you're trying to go AWAY from the water to higher ground. Here one had to go down TOWARDS the water to try and escape the fire

Had a tour guide give us quite an education on some of the history there, and in particular the sugar cane fields. The sugar cane trade used to be massive for the islands. After corn syrup hit the market, it basically killed it off. They have been shutting down the field for decades, and the last one shut down right before we got there.

He was concerned that they were going to allow developers to swipe up that land and just start building. The only thing stopping them thus far was locals stepping up in political positions and fighting them. The money being thrown around is nearly impossible to resist though, and he was sure that the island would be over run in the decade or so, sort of like the big island is.

It's pretty much like Manhattan or downtown SF. There's only so much property, so it will always be crazy expensive. You can live there if you're super rich, or miserably poor.

The only difference is the fields not being developed, and not being able to. I always though it as amazing that greed didnt end up getting Central park built on. What is that ground worth per sqft?

The properties that butt up against it? Ho LAWD. Crappy little townhouses half a block over are 25 million each. Now, had they NOT made the park, some of that land wouldn't have been quite as valuable, because it would just be like all the other blocks instead of "near the park" -- but still worth a fortune compared to the rest of the country.

I think it sits above the schist, too, meaning you could build those supertall structures that are going up around the Park. Not all of Manhattan can build straight up like that. If you get a big enough chunk of land you can build a supertall and max out on units/profits.

But Manhattan is already sinking due to the weight of all those huge structures.
