I don't think it was company funds. We seem to have these every few years among some of our lower-paid employees. We usually find out when the schemers leave their job and the rest of the group realizes they've been had. Then it's, "well, had we known about this while they were still employed here, we could have done something about it..."

Long time ago, in a marriage now far, far away, my ex got involved in one of those against my advice. By the time she figured out it was a scam, she lost about $1600. Of course, I rubbed her face in it. Because I cared.
