It's not really that much of a loss. Since the ship nor it's components were ever designed to be re-used, the intel he gets back is invaluable for the next launch.
I believe he also said before launch that he thought there was "maybe" around a 50% chance the launch would be a success. But that's not how he and SpaceX roll...
They're okay with explody things and getting REAL and helpful data from actually launching prototypes instead of mostly simulation data that "Old Space" uses MOST of the time.
It takes Old Space a year (at best) to build ONE while SpaceX has a few more almost ready to to go.
