I forget what it was like before cell phones. I mean, I know people would ask for your home number in case they needed to get in touch for some reason, but I don't recall that they would actually bother you about work stuff. With cell phones, everybody knows you've always got yours with you at all times, so they seem to think it's okay to call you on it -- even when you're not working.

I also just don't answer the phone if I don't know the number or am not expecting a call, so of course I'm the bad guy for not answering a call from "Private Number" who didn't even bother leaving a message in the era of phone scams

For that reason I never gave the company my cell number. They got a land line with voice mail for "emergencies".

Yes! And then whoop her ass in the JDPL. Twice, if your company doesn’t pay for your cell phone. Mawfks have no boundaries anymore and it makes me sick.

I had a boss a couple jobs ago who asked for my wife's cell phone. Flatly refused that one. She didn't see this as inappropriate at all, tried to make it about "if something happens to you at work, and I need to let her know."

I'm like, "beach, that ain't your responsibility. Something happens to me at work, you dial 9-1-1."

My first job, I got issued a beeper. It was close to obsolete by then, but cell phones weren't yet widely available and allegedly staff needed to be reached to rush in and push a button, if necessary. My friends joked that I was a drug dealer, which was probably much more glamorous, to be fair.
