Honestly, I don't blame him as much as I blame the critics and the public for accepting it. People that put stuff like this out and call it art should just be called out as charlatans, and then no one else would be tempted to do similar things.

Or am I putting too much faith in humanity again?

Yes. Sometime after Andy Warhol, people realized that commercialized, popular art "lite" could be packaged and sold to anyone gullible enough to believe that it had artistic merit. Every now and again, we see a photographer who puts in the effort to set up some amazing capture or some graffiti artist blazes a new trail of modern art. But the haute artiste community frequently does something like fling rhino poop against a canvas, calls it, "Mike Pence Meets Ron Jeremy on Mars" and someone pays $2.3 million for it.
