I think imma just go the semi-cheap route on the knives. She really doesn't use them enough to justify hundreds of bucks on them and i'm pretty sure that's what she would say if I asked her. I think she's just more or less looking for something decent looking aesthetically, not cheap and flimsy, and sharp enough to use every now and then when she uses them. I'll probably shoot for <$100 on those. Idk if this is true or not but I heard someone at work that seems pretty familiar with that kind of stuff say that if you aren't spending a lot on knives then they are almost all pretty similar from a quality standpoint.

On the pots i'm seeing a lot of All-clad, Cuisinart, and Anolon from people. Heavy is probably not so good for her as she's pretty small, getting old, and has a bad shoulder.
That actually makes a lot of sense. One good knife can cost more than a whole block. Sharp knives sometimes scare people, but they are so much more safe than dull ones.

All Clad is probably not a good idea for her because of the heft. Their hard anodized is lighter than the SS, but still pricey. Cuisinart seems to have similar lines to Calphalon for a much lower price point, but I don't really care for the weight/materials. My faves are carbon steel (that one is kind of a PITA to get seasoned, but once you do... one of the best pans I've ever owned) and cast iron for frying. For soups and long braises, Le Creuset or Staub are quality choices.

she'd slap the fuck outta me if I spent >$300 on a set of knives
Yeah, that's getting up into the gourmet sets that chef's use. The vast majority of home cooks don't really need something like that.

Welp.... our governor is speaking at 6PM today, rather than his normal 2PM briefing.... PROBABLY has to do with the local stations that cut to national news at that time... coward.

Expecting a curphew and tighter restrictions.

Fearing the worst - hoping for not the worst.
