He is almost right. Your little screw driver doesnt have the RPMs to really drill much, but for predrilling for little screws it will work, slowly.

next time you need to predrill, put tape on the drill bit like this. Then you will know when it is deep enough.

Also, to choose the right bit to predrill, you should be able to hold the drill bit over the screw, length wise, and the shaft of the screw should be almost completely gone, but you can still see the threads of the screw.
