Oh, and something definitely happens to my face... a big scrape on the chin and/or cheek. Maybe lose a tooth? Bite my tongue real bad?

I just want to avoid that butt clenching feeling when I'm walking downhill and zzzttt! My foot slips... I see the entire scenario in 2 seconds: slip, fall on my ass, bust my tailbone, slide down the hill, twist the fuck out of my ankle, heels of my hands are scraped to hell and I end up in a pile at the bottom, laughing to avoid crying, with nobody around for miles so i just sit there and die instead.

Kinda sounds like you did all of this but die. Wait... you aren't one a them internet ghosts, are you?

Long story short- should I go to the Bahamas next month? I'm getting anxiety about boarding the dog... the resort says that if I test positive for covid, they'll pay for 2 more weeks or a private jet home, but it seems like a lot of hassle to travel anywhere still. Plus, I don't want to broach the topic with Big Boss. It's times like these that El Bosso was so perfect... he would've packed my bags for me and wished me a jolly good time :sigh:

This guy will watch and discipline your pooch.

Well then, you can just always walk uphill and then call Uber/Lyft to bring you back down???

Stay out of the deep woods.

Anyone care to share their hiking shoe experience? I'm looking at Salomon or Hoka One. I just want something for walking in the hills that's light and grippier than regular cross trainer/sneakers for when the terrain unexpectedly changes. Nothing serious... couple of miles but I like cushiness & comfort. Hate having to always put moleskin on my heels.
I have a few pair of Merrell. I think they’re generally in the $100 range, but very comfortable.

I like L.L. Bean's gear and hiking boots/shoes. They're comfortable and very well made and reasonable pricing. Free shipping (purchase of $50 or more).

The article I started this journey with rated those as the best budget shoe (Moab). I'm a total newb at anything unpaved, so good info. Thx!

And thanks for this, too. I've been thinking maybe I need some ankle support, but most of the non-boot variety are ghastly. I fear that boots are going to be too heavy. I suppose I should go into a store to check fits, but gaaaaaaaaaaah! Again, that involves pants and hair brushing :puke:

There's some really lightweight boot options out there too. I've had some Timberlands and 5.11s in the past that were almost as light as sneakers.

Also, if you are worried about getting hurt during hikes I could always come along as yourn bodyguard. I'm a tough, outdoorsy type. See?

Yeah, I'm looking for something super light, that's why I was trending towards the shoes vs. boots. I've been exploring trails around here and most are paved or well-worn, but I like to explore and take some of the less beaten ones and they seem to get a little dicey. Almost took a header on some tree roots and then again while heading back down a trail where it almost disappeared completely. I would have back-tracked, but I forgot which way I came from and it was getting late, so I figured "down" was the best option at the time. I really have to make sure I have a charged phone, water and maybe some snacks in the future, otherwise, I'm going to end up in the news.
