tOfficial PAC-12 Thread

Heck of a job done by Lanning. Didn't think he would pull it off with being the 5th best team in the PAC. I wonder what kind of money is being thrown around to bring them to Eugene.
Yes they finished 5th. One stupid play away from winning the PAC. These kids see they will make a one play difference.

For sure. I just thought they would lose a little momentum.

24 hours ago it looked like they had. Now it looks pretty good that Oregon will finish with the top class in the PAC

remember when people told us the BigXII would thrive and eat the Pac and the Pac was going to die? the Pac schools left after LA are undesired?

I know its only 1 part but minus LA and OKTX and with the new 4 Big
the 2 conferences are not much different from each other with the pac maybe just a tad better.
these are combined scores with recruits and transfers.
Pac with 1 top 10 class, 2 top 25, 6 top 50(just over half the teams)
Big with 0 top 10, 1 top 25, 6 top 50(half the teams)

So Pac is going to have
the Heisman winner (Williams)
the Nations leader in passing yards (Penix)
National 3 and 4 Qbs in completion % (Nix and Bourguet)
and likely Sanders who was 4th in yards and 4th in completion % in the FCS
Probably should have included Rising since he was QB of the 2022 Pac 12 Champions.
De Laura top 10 in passing yards nationally

Part of me wants to include Ward at WSU top 25 passing yards
and now DJU who has crap numbers but was still the starter for the ACC champs

well @duckboy33 did a fine job of recruiting signings

as much as I hate to say it, im not sure that Washington isnt actually the best team in the Pac this year. missed both Utah and USC so who knows what could have happened. and we all know USC will be ranked highest next season but UW probably should be.

There isn't much of a gap between the teams in the top half of the conference.

Whoever figures out their defense first will have the advantage going into next year. They all have crazy good offenses as it is.

yards per game
nationally
2. Washington
3. USC
4. UCLA (I would expect a drop off)
5. Oregon (New OC but his prior team was ranked 12th nationally)
18. Utah

Def
19 Utah
32 Oregon State

yeah not sure how its gonna play out.

Yep, it's the start of the silly season and already folks are trying to put their hot takes up for next year.

SI has 6 PAC 12 teams in it's preseason top 25.

UW at 5 seems like someone fishing for a dark horse to throw out early. They have to show they can play defense before you can move them to top 10, more or less top 5.

The rest of the PAC teams look ok for one of these types of things.
Trojans 8
Ducks 13
Utes 15
Beavs 20
Bruins 25

It will still be surprising if any Pac12 team can go undefeated next year. Too many crazy good offenses and too many bad to mediocre defenses.

Penn St above Ohio State. Bama all the way down at 7 with LSU up to 3. The only non SEC/B1G/PAC12 teams in the top 10 are TCU at 9 and FSU at 10.
Pat puts a lot of stock in the schedules and games on the road vs home for much of these.

how is Utah, the back to back champs not higher than at least oregon and USC?
how are the beavers not above Oregon? same record and beat them

Beavs are losing some serious players on defense. In the secondary and Speights now to the Portal.

Predictions for the 2023 season shouldn't just be the 2022 standings

Here are some early thoughts on the PAC:

Washington - Offense will be stacked. Almost all the major pieces are pack and Deboer calls a great game. I also believe they upgraded at RB, which may allow them to be more balanced. However, UW didn't make enough upgrades on defense yet. I'm not sure there will be a huge jump for the defense.

Wazzu - Portal really hurt these guys. I think Dickert is a decent coach but they're really going to need Cam Ward to take a step forward or they may fall off. They still should compete for a bowl game.

Oregon - Offensive weapons are largely back. They were able to fill in a few missing pieces on the OL with some major portal ads. This should be a dominant offense. Defense made some moves in the portal and in recruiting to try improve things. I'm not sure if there will be a huge jump but that's the difference between Oregon being a top 15 team and PAC contender and being a legit CFP contender. Ducks will need those newcomers to greatly improve a bad defense.

Oregon State - Getting DJU is a huge get for the Beavers. Offense should be much more balanced and Smith will get the most of his team. They lose some serious talent on defense so I'd expect a drop off there. Overall, I expect the Beavs to remain a top 20 team but they will need to replace some talent on defense in order to contend for the PAC.

California - I like some of the offensive coaching changes that they made but you have QB concerns and less talent on paper than most of their opponents. A bowl game is possible but that feels like the ceiling.

Stanford - I don't know much about their coach but they've been decimated by the portal. It's hard to imagine Stanford gets to a bowl game.

UCLA - UCLA loses some major contributors but they've brought in some good players from he portal. Chip will have a formidable offense but they have a few more questions than the PAC 12 contenders IMO. We don't know who's going to start at QB and their defense may still have issues.

USC - USC is in a very similar position as Oregon IMO. They've got a ton of good offensive players and obviously they have a legit NFL caliber QB. Their big question is about improving that defense. They've made some huge additions in the portal. We'll have to see if those additions can improve USC's defense and if so, how much.

Arizona - Fisch has done a great job building up this program from the ground and we saw big gains in year 2. JDL is back and they have some wideouts. However, the portal took some of their better players away from the program. Still a huge fan of Fisch. We'll see if year 3 = bowl game.

Arizona State - Total rebuild in Tempe. Dillingham is bringing in a brand new roster. I like KD as a play caller but this is a tough spot to be in. I don't expect the Sun Devils to get to a bowl game.

Utah - Utah is the easiest team to project IMO. They have consistency at QB, they'll be able to run the ball and they'll play good defense. They'll be in contention to return to Vegas and play for a conference championship.

Colorado - This is the hardest team to project IMO. They were absolutely horrible last year. I said in the off season they had a legit chance to go winless and received some push back for that. They ended up winning 1 OT game and getting blown out in nearly every other game. Any good player CU had transferred out after 2021. Deion is inheriting a total rebuild. He's bringing in some serious talent. so they'll be better. But being significantly better could still mean 4 or 5 wins.

My guess is the winner of the PAC will come from Utah, USC or Oregon. Oregon and USC should both be loaded on offense and both made moves in the portal to improve defensively. Does it pan out on the field for either of them? If so, one of those teams will probably win the PAC. Utah is the model of consistency. Offense isn't as explosive but running the football and playing great defense can still win championships. As good as UW should be offense, they'll have to improve defensively to win the PAC IMO. I just don't know where they've significantly upgraded their roster in order to expect huge gains offensively. Oregon State won't surprise anyone. I think they're a top 20 team, improved on offense but I expect they'll take a step back on defense. UCLA is a little bit of a wildcard with all the personnel changes but they'll have talent and a great offensive minded coach.

I'd have to look, but it may come down to who they have OOC and which tough conf games they have at home vs road.

The only reason I opened that article was wondering what Crack pipe they were smoking having UW at 5. They believed there was enough added on D along with a fairly weak OOC and getting Oregon, WSU, and Utah at home. Still, UW has USC and the beavs on the road so I don't get his thinking. That's why I said it feels like he's trying to pick outside of the box a bit.

I sure don't have Washington at #5. I still think there is no favorite to go undefeated given how many tough offensive teams there are in conf and how unlikely any team will solve 100% of their defense this season.

It's going to be more chaos and unexpected losses next year.

Should be some entertaining games every week though.

Probably should have included Rising since he was QB of the 2022 Pac 12 Champions.

Can’t put Ward and QB in the same sentence.

a few other notes from the article
Colorado and Deion open Pac 12 play at Oregon then host USC
oregon and UW both have byes before their game
Oregon v USC and UW vs Utah same weekend
