tOfficial Twelve Team Playoff thread

But again, who cares? So you'll get that 12th spot over another average team and get blown out by Georgia? I just have no confidence that it actually matters who fills that 10-12 spot. They will not ever win anything but maybe a single game. Again, the best teams in CFB are absolutely incentivized to fill their schedule with easy wins. Easy wins get you into the top 10 and a locked in playoff spot. Record matters more than anything.

Michigan got blown out by Georgia last season and I see no shortage of Michigan fans bragging about making the playoff. There will still be added prestige when making it into this one even at 12 teams. Not to mention money for the school and conferences

You are right, but you don't get ready for Alabama or Georgia by playing Whatsamatter U

Yeah, in a 4 team system where its' still pretty hard to get there; that was a fun/good accomplishment after (you know) the RR and Hoke eras...and 5 years of Harbaugh getting pretty darn close. Making the top 4 is different than making the top 12. Harbaugh would have gone to the playoff, what, 3-4 times now in a 12 team?

But I'd wager those early games are irrelevant to how prepared you are come the end of the season, or post-season, when you're playing UGA or Ohio State.

harbaugh at Michigan would have made it in 16, 18 and 21

Right. And in basketball, there's far less separation between the top teams and the teams ranked in the 40's. In CFB, there's a massive difference between Georgia/Alabama and Oklahoma State at 9, or Michigan State at 10, or Pitt at 12. All those teams get decimated like Oregon if they play them in the playoff.
So what? What's the downside? At least they are eliminated on the field of play instead of being eliminated via a smoke filled back room based as much on perception/name recognition, etc as anything else.

Almost caught you before you corrected it lol. So basically, every other year in the Harbaugh era (sans 2020, which kind of doesn't count anyway) Harbaugh would have made it to the playoff.

The downside is that most top teams enter November knowing that pretty much nothing stands in their way of a playoff birth. Which even plays into the SEC's tradition of scheduling an FCS team in November.

Very true. I've always believed you are only as good as the teams you play week in/week out. Which is why the standard for a G5 to make it like Cincy did is to run the table in your weaker conference AND beat some good P5 teams in OOC. And it helps if you American conference brethren step up and get better.

I liked the mentality of the old Fresno State coach Pat Hill. He wanted to play the big boys and always did so on the road. Beat a lot of 'em too.

But that also doesn't mean you have to schedule tough OOC teams to add to it. If you're a G5 team you have to do everything to schedule 1-2 tough teams because your normal schedule is garbage. P5 teams don't have to do that.

ohio state = Whatsamatter U.

....and?

"Michigan Ohio State, where absolutely nothing is on the line. Both are in. A ceremonial trip to the B10 title is in store for one of them, where they have a shot to lose again and hurt their playoff spot"

in 16 as a 6 they play Florida State at home win and play ohio state
in 18 as 7 they play Florida at home win and play clemson
in 21 they get a bye and wait for the winner of Ole Miss /Mich st (due to movement in the rankings based on how the 12 team would do it, its a little different than how it ended up in 21)

Or get a bye week...

or improve it and get the first round bye
