tOfficial Twelve Team Playoff thread

i liked what Josh Pate said about CCG weekend.. turn it into wildcard weekend.. let the reg season champ and the runner up take that weekend off.. let 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5 or whatever combination fight for the last two spots
Yep, the CCG’s have an expiration date imo.

Too many games for one thing. The college football players union will likely take an ax to some of the unnecessary games for health & safety reasons.

Been saying this since they expanded to 12. They made sense in a 4 game playoff, but now it's just not all that helpful.

I think the first two rounds should be played on campus. Screw the bowls. Let ‘em choose from the other 120 leftovers.
Couldn't agree more. The idea of seeing some of these off the wall on-site matchups that never get scheduled in OOC would be great for the fans, which would actually be a nice idea for a change.

I think this bitch will go to 16. No reason for 14 if it’ll eventually get to 16 anyway.

The reason they are going to go to 14 first is that they still have championships games. You have to have some reward for people to play championship games. 16 doesn't do that. Also, 1 v. 16, 2 v. 15 etc just gives you some terrible first round match-ups. With 12, you got 5 v. 12, 6, v 11, etc., which should be better than 1 v. 16. With 14, at least you get 3 v. 14, and not 1 v. 16. Not all that much better.

Agreed on first two rounds on campus.

Yeah, with AQs, you could see the SEC and B1G doing 2 games instead of the CCG, with 3 v. 6 and 4 v 5 for spots in the CFP. That means your two best teams are getting a bye, and the others have to earn their way in.

The ACC and B12 would have to decide what they want to do and would likely do a CCG.

A 9 game IC would mean less likely that you have as many teams jammed up at the top, and that helps. But Texas would have been the SECC last year, not UGA. Don't like that at all.

Depends who their 9th game was against (and where). I think a decent number of SEC teams could have given Texas a game.

no.. HOME games
First round bowl games, none of those teams deserve a home game.

Home games in the second round for the conference champs

would love to see this on CCG weekend instead

i mean they could actually book the same venue to host these games.. like the mercedez dome for the SEC and the COlts stadium for the BiG

Plus, in this scenario, the B1G trades Oregon for Georgia.

18 to 12 teams. Then what. 2 teams like Oregon and Texas get another week to rust.

Would need to add 2 more in this case

After those first games there are 12 teams left. Everyone can't just play with 12 teams

Oregon
Texas
Georgia
Penn State
Winner of (Tenn and Ole Miss)
Winner of (Bama and LSU)
Winner of (Ohio state and Illinois)
Winner of (Indiana and Iowa)
Winner of (Miami and Clemson)
Winner of (BYU and Iowa State)
SMU
Arizona State

Not to mention no G5 teams at all?

that edit was just talking about the play in games for the final 2 auto bids of the P4

Yeah but it would require giving teams a bye and others having to play two extra games which is crazy

That's an intriguing idea.

Here's an SI article with some more info regarding this expanded Conference Championship weekend idea involving the top 6 teams in both the B1G and SEC vying for four CFP auto-bids in each of those top two conferences.

Big Ten considers potential change to conference championship weekend

It's an interesting idea that will generate more $$$ by playing 3 games in each of the two big boy conferences on Conference Championship weekend in exchange for 4 guaranteed playoff spots each for the SEC and the B1G.

I am not sure why Fox presented this. ESPN already has the contract from 2026 - 2032:

Per AI: In addition, ESPN has secured a new, six-year agreement – beginning in the 2026-27 season – for the entire CFP, which includes exclusive rights to all rounds of the expanded playoff – first round, quarterfinal, semifinal and National Championship, as well as continued exclusive rights to all ancillary programming ...Mar 19, 2024

So, FOX has nothing to do with this.

There are a lot of sources reporting this play-in idea. If I were the SEC, and they are serious about 4 AQs, I would have the two top teams play - let's remember that UGA beat a higher ranked Texas - with the round 1 bye at stake. Then do the 3 v. 6 and 4 v. 5 at home fields. You could have noon, 4pm and 8pm games. The main problem there is that if the B1G does the same thing then you would have them competing against each other. Still that would be a hell of a Saturday.

Those who say that isn't fair for the no. 3 team to have to play-in, let's recall that this year in the SEC we had 2 teams at 6-2 (UGA and UTjr), and then 6 teams at 5-3. Interestingly, based on the tie-breaker, it would have been USCjr @ UTjr, and LSU @ Bama. OM would not have had a shot ... losing to Ky and UF would keep them out. OM actually finished 8th in the league by tie-breaker.

If they go 4 AQs, the SEC will likely go to 9 games as that will cause some separation in the tie breaking.

I believe FOX proposed this because this will probably not officially be considered part of the playoffs, rather it will be the SEC's & B1G's method of choosing their 4 guaranteed playoff participants for each conference.

So essentially I guess these games under this FOX proposal are considered play-in games, not playoff games (they will be considered post-season conference games, just like the current CCGs)... and FOX probably will want the broadcast rights for the B1G's 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5 games. And ESPN will probably want the SEC's 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5 games.

....continued

I imagine NBC and CBS will want some of the action of the B1G's three Conference Championship Weekend games. Perhaps FOX, NBC, and CBS will rotate the B1G's 1v2, 3v6, and 4v5 games each year using a 3 year cycle... with each of those 3 networks getting one of those 3 games each year?

9 games are coming.. CDC had an interview on youtube with OTF.. The conference is going that way and getting the 4 AQ bids for the CFP.

Since we play ou on a neutral site, we only have 3 home games in Austin when we are the home team in Dallas.. same for ou. with the 9 game conference schedule..it's guarantee of 4 home games in years like that.
