Should be lots of landing spots with the scholly numbers increasing
Not really:
- Scholarships haven't been important for a few years now ... through NIL, they can easily get tuition paid for for anyone they want. I know UGA has had players over the 85 scholarship limit who got NIL instead. This has been common for all schools, including Oregon.
- At least in the SEC, football is still limited to 85 scholarships. Again, it doesn't really matter as NIL fills in where needed.
- While scholarships have been expanded to roster limits, the roster limit for football has tightened and is now at 105. Most teams carry 125 - 135 players today. For example, Oregon has 128 players on their published roster this year. They have to let 23 of those go. Across 136 schools, that's over 3,000 players who will lose spots and won't have a place to land because all the other schools have to get down to 105. Smaller schools in G5, and then down to FCS, etc. will now get far better players. UGA has some walk-ons who could have played elsewhere. They will have to now.
The extra 20—from 85 to 105—will likely be PWO-level players for the most part. Good players won't typically go in and be willing to be the 7th RB, the 14th WR, the 6th TE, etc., and relegated to the scout team.
