UCLA Will Have To Pay Reparations To Cal

But the difference between those weaker schools in the B1G or SEC and this is Cal is actually directly taking money from UCLA here
And not giving anything in return.

Vandy, Rutgers, and Minnesota at least provide content, fan viewership, academic collaboration, and contributions in other sports. Cal is just getting reparations at this point.

True. But no one will convince me that Purdue brings the same viewership to the B1G as Ohio State and Michigan. But they get the same cut from the networks. They're riding on a titty wagon as well.

How much would the media payout to the B1G drop if Ohio State and Michigan left like OU/Texas left the Big 12 and USC/UCLA leaving the PAC 12?

And I'm not knocking Purdue because you can put the majority members of the P5s in that category. There are really only a handful of teams that draw a lot of casual eyeballs. Unlike those of us that are CFP junkies.

Do you think they are providing an amount equal in proportion to what they receive? Cal's is definitely not in proportion because they aren't doing anything. But the others are probably closer to 0% like Cal than they are 100%.

It's crazy that a board even has the power to do these things.

This is like parents telling one of their children "you got a better job than your brother so give him money"

You don't know how accurate this is but I do think USC and UCLA should have brought friends and Cal/Stanford combo makes the most sense. That is going to be a lot of traveling for the both and those are two more potential away games to keep close by.

$2 million - $10 million per year.

That's on top of an already $6.3 million per year.

So as low as $8.3 million per year and as high as $16.3 million per year.

Who here thinks the decision will be closer to the $2 million or the $10 million?

It's California. I think we all know the answer to that.

Basically UCLA will be paying for USC leaving too.

The content holds value and the volume helps the top teams keep the value high. If Alabama went independent they would struggle to bring in 50mm in by themselves. They need games with Auburn, Tenn, LSU, Ole Miss, etc in all sports. Even the Tenn vs Vandy game or Tenn vs KY hold good value.

So not completely proportional but on a composite basis they help bring the value.

This isn’t a weekend o the beach it’s joining a major conference that can’t get additional value for Cal/Stanford and they aren’t interested in a diluted model of expansion.

Yes. That's insane. I'd take it to court and get it out of the hands of the regents.

Tell them they'll settle for a one time $10 million payment or GTFO.
I'd love to see this go to court, just for the giggles, to see if they COULD beat the Cali Regents and the Guvnor at their own game... :heh:

@fishinabarrel, I wrote that totally wrong after reading it again. I meant it as the phrase saying I agree 100%with your comment.

They have been a good, and consistent door mat for generations.
That has to be worth something.

Notre Dame, Texas, and possibly USC are the only real programs that could get away with being independent and be very successful. Most of the rest of the teams work better in leagues and their success was based on tradition.

I mean there are a few others and most the top 25 could survive but these 3 seem to stand out. Alabama is a strong program but playing Auburn, Tennessee, LSU, etc. adds more spice to their program kind of like Michigan and Ohio State are kind of tied together with the B1G.

I hate to break it to you but Texas and USC aren’t pulling numbers in a conference.

I’ll give you ND.

Purdue adds Big 10 tradition going back decades.
Cal/Stanford would not be adding that.
Nebraska, USC, UCLA add name recognition, but that's about it.
Cal/Stanford wouldn't even add that.

Has UCLA (or any of the UC-schools) ever brought a suit against the Cali regents? Presumably there are provisions for handling disputes internally.

As for the disbursement, UCLA remains part of the UC system, so they control how funds are allocated. It's no different than a board of directors/executive officers deciding how to allocate a company's budget amongst departments.

You asked if Gavin Newsom was involved in bullshit?

I wouldn't call them departments in the same company, more like two separate companies under a parent umbrella, and forcing one to subsidize the other is dumb. Ask Sears and Kmart how that worked out

There's a difference between saying that it's dumb and saying that UCLA should sue.

Why does it matter? Perhaps there hasn't been a reason to sue?

Has any UC team tried to leave the conference before?
