UNLV qb quits over NIL dispute

they are broke...
Yeah, most G5 schools don't have SMU type alumni money. (I know they ain't G5 anymore but they were until very recently.) In fact, I'd bet a lot of the P2+Middling 2 don't have that type of alumni money either.

This is exactly why schools should stay the fuck out of NIL. It should have always been an eat what you kill system to allow players to monetize their own name image and likeness. But schools making various financial “commitments”through collectives leads to crap like this, whether it’s schools over promising and under delivering or players trying to renegotiate under threat of finding a better deal.

This is unsustainable and if it becomes more widespread will make the game unwatchable.
I disagree, this needs to be completely under control of the school. They can fundraise and keep those funds separate but unless the school is involved there is no way to have any control. If you just let JoeBob's Auto pay a kid a million dollars to attend in return for appearing at the dealership one day then this is what you get.

But if you move it under the control of the school then auditing just has to happen through that schools NIL department, it makes the policing of it all fall to the school rather than the NCAA or some other body.

Ok, so you're just going to make assumptions and blame the school no matter what? Cool. We don't even know if he was truly "verbally promised" this money. It could have been a passing comment or something along the lines of "yeah we'll see what we can done for you".

Again, its a dumbass system. 18-22 year olds aren't well known for making the smartest decisions. And you can't actually sign anything until you are on campus.
lol you have people in here that are blaming the player..

Think he moved from Massachusetts (or wherever Holy Cross is at) to Vegas without having some sense everything was on the up and up?

This isn't the 80s no more.. passing comments? lol.. Sure

yep he's an idiot for thinking UNLV would live up to their word..

This makes more sense. Kid was dumb to not get anything in writing but probably trying to avoid taxes en sech. Now he has a hot start and knows that making noise like this is the only way to get what he was promised.

Not sure I disagree with him, but I don't like it.

But he can't transfer midseason, so why ruin his name with this stunt to play for another school next year?
Because he knows someone is going to give him more than he is currently going to make.

Yeah he should have made sure everything was in writing but I can see why he was being naive a bit. He's at Holy Cross and UNLV wants him and tells him 100k is on the table, guaranteed.. they send the 3k for traveling expenses. I mean who thinks they wouldn't honor it.. it's UNLV... well..

lesson learned

well he's currently not making anything so yes.

We are in a classic he said she said situation and typically the truth is somewhere in the middle.

The only way the truth is going to come out is if someone sues for breach of contract and my guess is neither party wants to go through discovery or pay the legal fees.
Exactly, the reality is somewhere between these two. It was probably an assistant pointing to other NIL deals and saying "play here and we can get you $100k" and the kid took it as gospel. Then he shows up and there isn't any NIL offers on the table and the kid gets angry. He thinks he was lied to, school thinks they didn't promise just informed, and the kid got advice from an agent saying he has "leverage" to get some money.

He does have leverage with this good start, but it's likely to disappear soon with harder games coming up and he's making a short term decision that will have long term consequences.

But he is pissing off a LOT of schools in the mean time. So if something happens with that other school between now and when the portal opens in a couple of months, the kid could end his college career with this nonsense.

He has this year and that’s it. After this year he gets to be a normal person and try to figure out how to survive like the rest of us. It’s a stunt, that will probably work.

I think it was a stunt to get UNLV to pony up. If that works then so be it, but if the school says "nah, pound sand" then the kid is screwed. He knows he is at the red shirt limit. This feels exactly the same as someone coming to me asking for a raise because they have a better offer somewhere else. 100% of the time I congratulate them on their new job and ask for their badge. 100% of the time they have backtracked and "uh well errrrr I haven't accepted yet an I really like it here and want to stay but you know can you help me?" and I say no and tell them they should start looking for a new job.

Are you saying the guy doesn’t have a redshirt year left?

I hope he does TBH. FCS QB that can’t complete a forward pass out here making demands. Can’t see his market being too hot

Not sure how you got to the conclusion I'm claiming that, but he's played in 3 games now so he has to make the decision to redshirt right now. If he plays saturday then he has zero wiggle room.

Anyone that would offer 6 figures to a QB from Holy Cross is probably retarded
The QB of Thompson High School, a 10th grader, in Alabaster, AL has been offered 7 figures to transfer to Georgia to play high school ball. (note Georgia is not mentioned in the article below but that was the rumor and the reason the GHAS banned NIL collectives)

If true that's retarded.
If true the kid's retarded for not taking it.
If true the people putting up the money are retarded.

Yeah this is a tough one. I don't like that schools could be out there recruiting and offering money that isn't paid and then they get away with it. But I also don't like a quitter who bails on his team.

I don't see many outcomes where the kid ends up winning. Now that this is out the list of schools willing to deal with him is greatly reduced. If there is a school offering more money, they can't put it in writing. Assume the kid sits the rest of the season and has his one year of eligibility. How many schools want to deal with him? That one school knows there is zero market for the kid so maybe their offer gets reduced. What's the kid gonna do then? Almost seems it would have been better to not quit but just make a giant stink on social media. Then the kid gets the attention on the school like he wants but comes across as a team player for continuing to go out there while big bad school "exploits" him.

I mean they were undefeated but was it bc of him anyway?

Dude was completing 44% of his passes and was throwing for a bit over 100 ypg. He did have the dual-threat ability. Either way it sucks for UNLV but they did it to themselves.
