VT /Fuente part ways

If I were Frost, I'd go get Tom Herman for OC who's currently just an analyst at Chicago.

He had good numbers in 2014 at Ohio St when G5 Houston nabbed him.
Patterson available and could handle the other side of the ball.

Need to hire Ron Zook, special teams guru

he has a funky offense, but he has Wake Forest sitting @ 9-1

fans are dumb

and you also wouldn't have to worry about him not being able to put together a P5-caliber coaching staff

He's also a poor recruiter from what they said (I don't know a lot about him personally..... Maybe it's just because it's Wake) and if that's true then I'd prefer they go in another direction.

VT needs someone who can take advantage of the local talent in the North Carolina/Virginia/DC/Maryland recruiting areas. Not take a chance on someone "just coaching them up." Those areas are consistently up for grabs every season and there are no in-state elite programs in any of them to pose a serious threat if you get everything clicking just right. That's always been VT's white whale that they needed... And Clawson..... From what I've surmised from others..... Ain't the person that's likely to get VT there.

I have been to a ton of VT games, all when Beamer was coach. When Fuente arrived, he had some success. Most of this was with Frank's players. Hell, now just go back and look at the last few seasons. Missing bowl games, barely scraping by to get a bowl game, barely achieving an 8-9 win season. The roller coaster ride that has been this season. He should have been gone last season and was about to be served his walking papers just as whoever the fuck it was stepped in at the press conference and announced that Fuente was staying. Just prolonging the pain. So, who do they go after? More important question, who actually ends up in Blacksburg?

he's recruiting to the smallest P5 school in the country. on top of that, Wake's black student population is somewhere between 330-350 each year. Not the easiest place to recruit and sign players to a sport that is 60-75% black.

Very possible. There are definitely limitations at what you can do recruiting wise at Wake. There are some at VT as well.... But they need a guy that can sell the program to a kid and his parents and overcome those limitations. Maybe that is Clawson? Idk. Just sharing the fan perspectives on him that I've read.

Your timeframe is a bit wonky. Texas and USC have won NY6 bowls fairly recently, and Washington went to the playoff 5 years ago.

Both programs have been struggling since Texas got rid of Mack Brown and Pete Carroll left USC. They have went through numerous coaches and have seen program lows.

Texas lost at home to 1-8 Kansas this past weekend, I would say my time frame fits. Even in that NY6 year for Texas that you cite, they lost to Maryland. They fired that coach only 2 years after it.

Some of the programs have had great years in the timeframe you listed.

Tennessee would be an example of a program without such a great year in that timeframe.

Would make my decade.

i would be shocked if Dave Clawson was in play for Virginia Tech

You got any inside info saying he's not? Please tell me you do because there's a significant amount of smoke saying we're probably gonna hire him and I'm not too happy about it.

no inside info, i just would be surprised tbh

not a knock against VT, but he still has a stud QB for another year + his kids go to Davidson

at the same time, his stock is probably never going to be higher

Idk why but I feel Tony Elliott is a solid fit for VT. Clemson fans may question his playcalling but he's been on the coaching staff since 2011 and had a front row seat in how Dabo got Clemson from fringe top 25 team to where they are today. Not sure if Elliott is #1 on your board but I think this is the type of job Elliott has been waiting for

Current season struggles aside, I'd still be down for Elliott. Plus, HC skillset is different from OC skillset. He seems like the kind of guy that might do better in the HC role

Elliot scares me a bit.

No HC experience.
Hit the lottery with QB talent and once that ran out started to sink offensively.

I'd rather take a chance on a guy like Napier that has scrapped to win than someone that had a silver spoon in his mouth.

I had no idea there are betting odds on hiring coaches but then again I am not really into betting, etc. Here's one thing I ran across - personally my preference is (highest to lowest) - Napier, Chadwell, (don't hate - whores need lovin' too) Freeze, Clawson...

Virginia Tech next football coach odds: Jamey Chadwell, Billy Napier, Mike Elko, Dave Clawson favorites to replace fired Justin Fuente

Via SportsLine oddsmakers: Who is the next full-time Virginia Tech football coach?

  • Jamey Chadwell +400
  • Billy Napier +500
  • Mike Elko +600
  • Dave Clawson +700

  • Sonny Dykes +1300
  • Hugh Freeze +1500
  • Shane Beamer +1800

I'd go after Fickle hard with as big a dump truck as I could find.
Napier would be the second call.
Then I go rouge and call Kendal Briles.

Athlon Sports even mentioned Dan Lanning DC at Georgia. Sean Lewis (Kent State), please hell no. And the ones mentioned above.

Fickle seems like he would be an awesome fit tbh
