War, what is it good for? Other than good movies that is. What are your top war movies?

The movie at times seemed to be an argument against the theme of the book.

I have heard a crazy story that the script did not even begin as an adaptation of the book but simply ended up having too much in common with it when it was finished but I never did a moment's research on that.

I hadn't heard that before.

I always thought Full Metal Jacket was a truer representation of the book than it’s own movie was.

"Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine" was the original title. Verhoeven never even read the book
The book was written around the time that Heinlein was breaking away from writing for the juvenile markets to adult fiction. It was a satire that failed to express it that way to the public. They movie, perhaps accidentally, took that a level or two magnitude further.

The movie started with screenwriter Edward Neumeier, who had read the novel as a child and loved it. When it came time to write a script, he wrote an action movie about Earth soldiers fighting an alien insect race, and it was called... no, not Starship Troopers... Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine.

At the time, no one was sure they could get the rights to Starship Troopers, so the movie was just about the battles between humans and alien insects. In fact, by the time anyone got around to getting the rights for Starship Troopers, the movie had already started filming. Some names and locations were changed, but Bug Hunt became Starship Troopers pretty easily.
