Welcome to the new age of CFB University of Michigan

247 has been doing transfer rankings for a couple years now.
Michigan only accepted grad transfers until this year. Not sure what changed, but the whole grabbing guys from the portal is new to UM fans. Usually it is one, maybe two guys.

For a team like Michigan, who isn't as deep as many of top recruiting schools -- it is big to be able to pull some guys in to fill holes.

Who would have expected this?

I thought I was seeing things when I saw the portal guys we were signing. I'm just happy to see the school joining the rest of CFB in the new age of the system.

Wasn't Stanford's oline awful? I'd be bullish on taking 2 guys from that line.

The Arizona State guy is pretty good though.
I have no idea, but the ASU guys is really the only one i'm worried about getting. He can take over at LT. The Center we got from Stanford is big too, as we are losing our C, who was an All-American.

Drake Nugent is the center we signed. He started 2 years at Stanford and in 993 pass block snaps, he only gave up 2 QB hits and ranked 8th in the nation among Centers with PFF grade of 80.2. So that is a big get for UM.

Let's not get crazy here. The transfer portal has been around a little while. Michigan is just late to the party. I'd LOVE to be a school who does "anything for the W" -- Lord knows we have the money to do so. I will celebrate if we ever start using NIL to our advantage, instead of watching everyone else do it.

I'd be concerned about Michigan's recruiting being that bad that they have to basically bring in a whole starting lineup of transfers for a position group, i'm not sure that strategy is 100% sustainable long term. Not every group is going to mesh well together.

It makes sense for them to do it. Every team is going to have some gaps(some less so than others) but it'll be big for programs to be able to do that.

It isn't like it is a big secret that UM doesn't recruit like the top teams. Hell -- you can see the recruiting class we have signed right now for 2023. We are barely top 20. In the age of NIL deals -- Michigan does little to nothing with it. That's why I laughed at the Georgia fan who said Georgia isn't using NIL to recruit, then mentioned how every player is giving 50k to do charity work.

As far as the OL transfers -- I have no issue with it. If they don't mesh -- they won't be a starter. If anything -- it gives Michigan depth at the most important position for the offense we run. UM has a tremendous OL coach and he is a guy I know we will lose soon.

No doubt -- the only teams who don't really need are those programs bringing in top 5 recruiting classes every year, which Michigan is definitely not one of them.

Prior to this year, Michigan wouldn't accept transfer credits toward graduating from other schools, so the football team was limited to only bringing in Grad Transfers, who had clean academic slates.

I'm surprised about how "bad" Michigan's recruiting has been this year.

I thought for sure they'd get at least a little boost from their recent success. They've actually fallen off in recruiting compared to the last 2 classes though.

No top 100 players, only 2 in the top 200. Theyd be #25 currently if they purely went by average player ranking. Behind South Carolina, Arkansas & Michigan State.

Ohio State fans whine about us not using the portal a ton. I'm 100% against using the portal just for the sake of using it. If we can get a top guy at a position that has questions, go for it. But if not I don't like the idea of just randomly grabbing players just to say "we used the portal". In Michigan's case it does make sense to use it a bit more to supplement some of what they don't get from recruiting and make up the gaps with the elite recruiting schools that way.

How funny that transfer credits seem to suddenly be universally accepted now that the transfer portal has gone crazy. Lol.

We've lost recruits in every sport because of how strict our admin is on transfer credits. We wouldn't accept any credits toward a major if the courses weren't completed at Michigan. I'm wondering with the Stanford kids, if we accepted them because Stanford is superior academically to Michigan. I also wonder if we were able to sign the Nebraska true freshman LB, because he hasn't taken classes toward his major yet?

Will be interesting to see. I hope it is that we finally got the stick out of our ass. Only time will tell.

I think all schools are probably starting to bend their rules a bit to fit the portal.

I'm not surprised. It has been building up since NIL was introduced. Even the classes that have been solid, they were like that because we secured top talent late after a coach left, like Derrick Moore after Lincoln Riley left or Keon Sabb.

I think that is probably why we see UM so active in the portal. They are bringing in guys with experience at positions of need.

This is a big deal for UM fans. We've bitched about this for so long. I'm crossing my fingers that this is the new norm and we can get some depth from the portal more often. We don't recruit like the Ohio State's, Bama's, Georgia's, etc. -- so this is a way to help out schools like UM.

Seems like some of my thoughts about where the recruits transferred from may be right. Michigan is looking to sign a TE that is a junior and this is the last line of the article.
He's also a true junior so there may be issues with Michigan's transfer admissions policies to work through

So Michigan may not have opened the gates to the portal and it just so happens the guys we were able to sign this year, were cleared to do so.

So Michigan's QB depth behind McCarthy next year is pretty abysmal. The current backup as a Walkon whos only FBS/FCS offer out of HS was Fordham. And they have 2 low 3* FR with a low low 3* ATH incoming.

This is their backup plan. A shitty Indiana QB who couldn't even start at Indiana?

They really really need to keep McCarthy healthy next year.

Well we had two QB's leave in the portal after this season. The next big QB we are recruiting is in 2024 (5 star Jadyn Davis). They went after Dante Moore, but didn't have the funds to secure him or weren't willing to pay for it.

We have two QBs from last years class but nothing we'd want to rely on.

I'm starting to realize -- OSU fans don't really have the concept of how far off our recruiting is compared to yours. Michigan does not recruit anywhere near the talent you do. We just cannot miss if we do get a high ranking recruit, as we don't have another one waiting in the wings. We recruit guys who fit the system, we splash in the occasional 5 star guy like JJ McCarthy, like Donovan Edwards, like Will Johnson. but the majority of our team are guys outside of the top 150 and many are outside the top 300.
