Yeah I stayed out as much as I could. it if meant sitting in the bushes beside the houses because that was the best shade, so be it. Water hose for drinking, walking up to the grocery store or snacks. Tons of sandlot stickball.

I was fortunate though. I grew up on a large plot of land (just over 100 acres) and both my mom's sisters lived on it as well. There were 9 cousins so easy to organize a game. A stocked farm pond, great trails for four wheelers. We didn't ever have to look for something to do
To be fair, there wasn't anything to do INSIDE the house. All the fun shit was OUTSIDE.
