sorry, I just don't walk around pretending to be some kind of soldier when I am not.

and I think a real soldier will laugh at you for having a "scabbard" for your gun like that...

Keep the gun protected from the elements and environmental abrasions like sticks and rocks. Keeps both hands free to be used for climbing. Easier weight distribution.

You've obviously have never backpacked to a hunting camp.

Don't know him that well, but then I think it also could be used for storage which would keep the gun cleaner. Ammo carrier etc. Too many features, I don't know how he would use it.
