What is the first movie you remember seeing at a theater?

Kids our age would jump off the high dive and swim like hell to get to the pool ladder. Jaws fucked us all up.

Even swimming in the local neighborhood pool creeped me out for a couple weeks after Jaws. I think 'CornPop' kept the sharks out though.

also saw Jaws as a kid at the drive in.
I wasnt supposed to go, but I was a whiny brat. Big mistake for my parents & me LOL
Had nightmares for a long time. I kept thinking if I left my arm hanging off my bed Jaws was somehow gonna get me LOL (like if I was hanging it off a boat)

Lakes! Fuck that. I knew Jaws was in the lake!!!!

Welcome to the movies kid! :laugh3:

Do you guys sit around now telling stories and show off all of the scars that you got fighting to keep out of the water?

About 10 years ago we still had two Drive-In's left in Nebraska. One was way out west in the panhandle, the other in a small town called Neligh, NE about a 2 hour drive from Omaha.

I didn't expect them to survive and wanted my kids (appx 8/9) to be able to say they've been to a Drive-in movie before they were completely gone.

When I was a kid the playground in front of the screen was very basic metal pipe stuff on dirt/grass. A metal slide, jungle gym, merry go round, etc.
The Neligh Drive-In had a couple modern inflatable bounce house/slide type stuff.
They had a 'Pajama Contest' down at the playground and my boy won that with his Spiderman jammies. He won a wiffle ball/bat combo set and some gift certificates for the concession stand. I've never seen him eat a slice of pizza with a bigger smile on his face. I just backed the pick-up in, dropped the tailgate, and put a few lawn chairs in there. The place was packed.

We really enjoyed our visit so I followed them on Facebook for a possible return trip. I remember the the Drive-In doing a fundraiser to upgrade their projector from the old film reel type to digital because movies made on film reel were being phased out. Therefore the film reel projectors would be useless for modern movies.
iirc they needed to raise $90,000 for the upgrade or they were finished. They must have raised it, because they're still open to my knowledge.

Since then a Drive-In has recently opened just outside of Omaha. I've never been to the new one and don't know how successful they are.
Drive-In's are a tough business in areas that get winter weather, because they're seasonal. They're maybe open half the year (at most).
Not to mention they're weekend (Fri-Sat) entertainment. The movie doesn't start until it's dark outside and therefore doesn't get over until near midnight or after. You're not taking the kids to the Drive-In when they've got school the next morning.
Movie theaters in general seem to be struggling so a drive in would be an up hill battle. There are a couple in my area still going. They do some cool things like show old movies that you might have seen when you actually went as a kid or have cruise in to bring in the vintage car crowds so they will have a car show earlier in the evening and then start the movie after dark

I want to say it was ET...and it terrified me. The white suits....gave me nightmares.
That was a whole genre of movies by themselves. Porky's, Revenge of the Nerds, Screw Balls

American Pie before American Pie

Have you seen the documentary on making jaws? Funny shit as speilberg had speakers all over the area to let people know if the shark was working. They had all kinds of mechanical issues with it.

maybe you saw a different version of ET than I did...

I don't remember the movie, but the first movie I remember going to, my brother knew the projectionist and I hung out with him and learned how and when to change reels. That was awesome but that job is gone now.

Where the Red Fern Grows

Family friends daughter was in it and they had a premier here.

Benji at a drive in theater. It had to be a re-release because it came out in 1974 which was the year I was born so I doubt it was new when I saw it.

Star Wars at that same theater in 1977.
