Top choices are A&M, Ole Miss, and MSU

They have the coaches in place that has the potential to make the programs into elite.
They have the opportunity to good enough (atleast 60% in bluechips) to compete
Money

Only thing missing is some momentum year-to-year, consistently putting multiple 9/10 win seasons in a row

I was about to post some of this ... what is it that makes Clemson, Clemson?

- They have a dynamic coach who had no previous experience.
- That coach was given a ton of time to learn how to coach.
- They had a natty in the past, and a passionate fanbase - they aren't newbies to CFB.
- They had a clear path to the CFP by being in a shitty conference with no competition.
- They were in a good recruiting area - not SC per se, but Georgia, SC, NC, TN, and FL.

The 4th is the most important and excludes any SEC or B1G team. Will have to come from the ACC, PAC, or B12. The PAC teams will have a problem with recruiting territory, but let's go Oregon from the PAC. The B12 ... maybe Baylor? The ACC could be FSU or Miami, but they don't meet your requirements. Realistically, that leaves Oregon. Throw in Utah as a wildcard, however unlikely.
Those three will be hidden a long way behind the financial 8 ball real soon. It'll be almost impossible to overcome that IMHO.

They have strong fan support like Clemson and money.

However, I think you are correct as long as they are stuck in Big12, mostly due to travel wearing their teams down.
What am I missing? They'll be stuck with less than 1/2 of B1G/SEC conference revenue. Do they have the donor base to make up for that size of financial discrepancy?

A&M
MSU
Iowa

Those are really the only 3 i could see.

A&M would be my choice

But i also think MSU and Iowa are closer to being on that Wisconsin type level than any of the others

If wager if to go back to the start of the century those 2 teams probably have more top 10-12 finishes than any other team on your list and a lot of the teams you didn't include on it

Ultimately though A&M has the recruiting hotbed and the money. They'd be the obvious choice if they weren't in the sane division as Bama

Of the teams that haven't won a NC, I'd have to imagine Oregon has been the closest (at least in the BCS/CFP era)

Once OU is gone Oklahoma State could get there. They have been a damn good team. Beat texas a lot. Just cant beat OU consistently. They were 1 yard away from a Big 12 title last year. They can win the Big 12 pretty regularly and get to the playoffs.

They have more money than we probably think but point taken. However, from 2004-2011 they were making runs in the old Big East and were trying to become one of those teams. They were regular fixture in top 10.

They aren't going to get there.. sure Gundy has had a few really good teams...that failed to make a championship.. I think he has them at their ceiling, they always seems to fumble at the half yard line from getting to the big stage. He has never been able to recruit like Clemson did even before their breakout seasons.

I know some teams like that are going to make "runs" like you describe the 'neers did. But at the end of the day those teams will deposit checks that are way less than the bottom teams in the B1G and SEC who AREN'T making "runs". Any good coaches that come along from those programs are going to be lost to those higher paying ones. Just don't see any of them sustaining it for any period of time.

But, I've been accused of being pessimistic more than once in my life. (I argue I'm a Realist, not a Pessimist) While I have a lot of Idealism in me, I'll still be a Realist when facts hit me right between the eyes. And if the financial discrepancies being bantered about become true facts.....................

Ill Allow It Spanish GIF

You guys are regular contenders but don't have the crown.

Basically, it would not be much of a stretch to see either take it to the next level so it wouldn't be as much of a "out of no where" pick like Clemson's rise.

they main difference is that Clemson actually had a NC before their rise unlike oregon/wisky

basically - oregon/wisky/a&m would be more of a "Out of no where" pick than Clemson

It is a phenomenon that whenever Oregon is mention in anything a Nebraska fan must take a jab at the Ducks. This is a reason I've never stressed about living expenses, because at the end of the day I know I always got a place rent free in Nebraskaland minds

Yeah, but who in their right mind would ever want to live in Nebraskanland Minds? Rent free or not!

True but it was in the distant past. Teams like Kentucky, Ole Miss, and Vandy have National Titles in distant past as well but it would be a MAJOR Surprise to see any of these 3 programs become super powers.

Minnesota has 4-5 National Titles but they are in the same boat.

Oregon and Wisconsin have been a 10-11 game winner in most seasons the last 20 years. (Wisconsin's rise really goes back to the 1990s actually). I debated putting both on the list but I decided to leave them off because they are unique. Clemson was kind of out of no where. I use LSU actually as an example as well. Prior to 2001, they were kind of in same boat as Clemson (a good program that had a title in distant past but they lived in shadow of other teams).
