They threw Cinci a bone this year, mostly because of how the cards fell. Had Oklahoma St not lost, and had #5 been a P5 team at 11-1 who didn't lose to Cincy, I think they get bumped again. Now that they play Alabama and will likely get throttled, will the committee ever put another G5 team in the playoff again (assuming we stay at 4 spots for the next few years)? I think they'll use this year to justify never putting them in again.

If there’s ever another regular season like 2007 and there’s an undefeated G5, I think they can make it

But this has been a pretty chaotic year all the way around too

You'd need an undefeated with a fair P5 win or two, and a slew of 2 or more loss teams #5 and below.

ND was a one loss team this season, but lost to said G5 team and didn't play a CCG.

I addressed the exact issue on tHoop years ago and got a lot of blowback.

"It'll NEVER happen"
"NO WAY"

Yada Yada

If getting throttled in the semifinal is going to be their justification for never putting one in again, then they need to never put these 20+ point losers in again either.

2014 Florida State (39 point loser)
2015 Oklahoma (20 point loser) Michigan State (38 point loser)
2016 Ohio State (31 point loser)
2018 Notre Dame (27 point loser)
2019 Oklahoma (35 point loser)
2020 Clemson (21 point loser)

And there were a couple of 17+ point losers that were just as bad or worse than some of the 20+ point ones.

Imo, it depends on how Cincy performs. Assuming they get throttled, the question would be...did Bama dominate them from start to finish? Or did they stay close for much of the game, but Bama wore them down and added a couple of late touchdowns?

If it's the former, then yeah, it'll likely be awhile.

If it's the latter, I think it will still take some unusual circumstances, but the committee will be less hesitant.

Sure, but unless the G5 team has stacked up some big wins in that given year it'll probably be a couple year process. How much did Cincinnati having an undefeated 2020 season and almost beating Georgia in the bowl. Basically it was the perfect year for it: team with previous high-level success, only loss in two seasons was a last-second one to Georgia, a big win at ND and the rest of the field is down.

Do have to wonder if the committee is hoping Alabama runs Cincinnati out of the building. Last thing they want is them to take Alabama to the brink or even win and increase calls for future G5 teams getting a chance.

"See? We finally let a G5 team in and they couldn't hang" is probably the mindset. But I'm also cynical towards the CFB powers that be.

But we know that won't happen. What has happened as certain conferences "seemed" weaker, is their champs have been left out in favor of like two SEC teams.

It took basically the perfect situation for them to make it this year. ND doesn't play them this season and ND is in, even with a loss.

Of course not. They weren't going to leave out the undefeated defending NC and ACC champion like FLorida State in 2014. They still were the worst pretender of the four. All I'm saying is getting thrashed in the semi shouldn't be the justification for not putting a G5 in.

I figure once Alabama beats em by 50 or so the cry from the public will be “never again”.
G5 should have its own playoff.

A lot of these G5 programs will be headed to the Big 12 though, so some current G5 teams might make the playoffs as a P5 team in the future

Maybe...or will the B12 turn into a non-P5 conference (or the least respected) soon...if not already? Every P5 conference has major brands associated with it. Without Texas or OU who are the big names of the B12? They might just turn into the Big East during the BCS era.

Yeah I have to agree with whoever stated it above. Some P5 teams got ran out of the building in the playoffs. So, Cincy gets beat by 20 or 30+, some P5 teams did too. It sort of compares to the two teams leaving the BIG XII for the SEC and how the BIG XII might lose P5 status. I heard a podcaster say, hey wait a minute, the BIG XII teams were fine with TX and OK to make the BCS/playoffs. Now, two teams (one had a lackluster year and the other one didn't make the champs game) are gone, and now the BIG XII isn't P5 anymore. How does that work?

Even the 8 team version of the Big East had chances to make the BCS NCG. West Virginia was going in 2007 if they didn’t lose to Pitt

What's happens when Cincy beats Alabama?! :noidea:

It depends on how Cincy does.

If they get blown the fuck out in the future it will be easy for the committee to say "well look what happened when we put one in, lets not do that again"

This Cincy team is nowhere near as good as the following G5 teams:

2004 Utah
2006 Boise
2008 Utah(fuck them)
2009 Boise
2009 TCU
2010 TCU
2011 Boise
2017 UCF

All those teams would skullfuck this Cincy team.....and I’m still very nervous about this game
