pain don't hurt. honestly, i only really had it bad once in my toe. swelled up really bad and was sensitive to air. didn't know what it was at first so was drinking heavily just to sleep at night. other than that, would just feel my toe start to tighten up here and there and would take it easy for a bit, until i thought i fucked up my ankle (couldn't put weight on it) and he said, nope, it's the gout. cleared it up quickly with some pill and went on the other stuff, ezpz.
