Worst coaching hire of all time?

I've got Ellis Johnson at Southern Miss

2011 Southern Miss went 12-2, won conference USA including blowing out 7th ranked, undefeated Houston in the CUSA CCG under Larry Fedora.

2012 after Fedora went to UNC, Southern Miss hired Ellis Johnson. They went 0-12. Johnson was obviously one and done.
Rich Rod has to be up there. Pretty much decimated our program for 10 years.

But nobody anyone has mentioned has taken over a 12 win team and turned them into a 12 loss team in year one other than the OP. Nothing has topped Ellis Johnson yet

He took over a team that lost to an FCS team the year before, and needed more time to overhaul the offensive scheme. The Rich Rod systems requires speed, he took over the slowest of the Big Slow teams

And that's exactly why it was a bad hire. Michigan need a tweak, not an overhaul. This was a team coming off a huge victory against Florida, with a 5 star QB in Ryan Mallet who was chased off by the hire. Plus, it's not like Rich Rod has gone on to great success elsewhere.

I don't think Rich Rod could have succeeded here for the same reason he hasn't succeeded elsewhere; and for the same reason Hoke succeeded at SDSU, couldn't at Michigan, and was once again coach of the year back at SDSU.

I’d say Rich Rod was very successful at West Virginia and is the best coach Arizona has had this century. West Virginia hasn’t been close to natty contention since Rich Rod left and Arizona has became Vandy since Rich Rod left.

Rich Rod could have been successful at Michigan if he had enough time to get rid of all the slow poke losers Carr had recruited

I think there are certain coaches that are able to take lower end talent, find certain gems (like Pat White) and exploit the college game to win more games than they should. But that isn't the kind of coach a program like Michigan needed, who did have talent already.

Ryan Mallet ended up being one of the best QB's Arkansas has had in program history.

I just think Rich Rod was about a half decade too late at Michigan and the college game caught up to that kind of football. Especially since he put no effort into actually stopping other teams from scoring.

There was a lot of talent on the WV teams. Better talent than he had at Michigan for sure.

He had P5 success before and after Michigan as a HC. I’ve gotta think it was the program, not the coach that was the issue.

And he didn’t turn a 12 win team into a 12 loss team in year one like Ellis Johnson did

Also, Rich Rod improved every year at Michigan. Not a big stretch to think he could have at least matched Hoke’s first year, but kept the success going as the roster got filled with more of his players. The time to fire him would have been after the 3-9 first season, not the 7-6 year three when the team was showing real improvement

I'm not sure that's true. Denard beat out Pat White's rushing record. RR had 10 total NFL draft picks at WVU during his span there. He had 7 in just the 3 years at Michigan.

And sure, RR improved. From just 3 to 7 wins. That's Nebraska level bad.

You go from the tradition slow ground and pound Big Slow offense to the spread, you need some time. Imagine if Clemson had shitcanned Dabo after his mediocre first 3 years

Most teams make that transition over time. You slowly implement the scheme to fit the players you have. What Rich Rod did was a failure. Trying to run a spread system with guys recruited for a pro style attack was dumb and it failed because it was dumb. There's also a reason no one runs that kind of offense anymore, because it doesn't work at major programs in major conferences. Even Oregon has moved on.

See Chip Kelly at UCLA.

Harbaugh would be winning nattys if he was the coach at WVU

it makes you WONDER about the Michigan Wolverines

on the topic of WVU, is anyone else concerned about @ralphiewvu

hasn't been around since January

He was fired in 2010, that offense was still a big part of CFB back then. Rich Rod didn’t do the transition well, but he was trending in the right direction when he was was fired

That was right at the tail end of it not working in CFB. Rich Rod started to only competed and win games against the worst teams in the B10 and our bad OOC. We were being slaughtered in conference play still.

He deserved another year IMO. Arizona was shit before and shit after Rich Rod. They were a solid program under Rich Rod

Didn’t Michigan just lose to App State and Oregon? You lost your entire offense. It was the perfect time for a complete overhaul. RichRod had Michigan going in the right direction but they were in too much of a rush for a Michigan Man and Bo was going out of his way to sabotage RR.

7 wins isn't "the right direction". We were 3-5 in the B10, with wins over just Indiana, Illinois and Purdue. But more importantly, got dominated by MSU, Wisconsin, Penn State and Ohio State.
