You want to become a powerhouse in football? Here’s how you do it

In compliance with title 9 :).

There is a reason SEC has always been strong in Women's Basketball and are getting very strong in Softball.

To balance Football, they spend on Women's sports but other Men's sports get neglected.

Other men’s sports like wrestling, soccer, gymnastics and volleyball get cut but the ones that are keep totally get funded.

The SEC rules in college baseball and no other conference can catch them and our basketball is light years where it was even a decade ago. SEC is not just Kentucky anymore.

I literally can’t think of a sport the SEC fields where they aren’t competitive.

Yeah, in modern era it has been dispersed around well. Mike Slive and then later Greg Sankey pushed SEC programs to invest more in Men's Basketball and we have seen more competitive results (although we are still weaker in the Main Tournament). However, in the 1980s- early 2000s, for example, the SEC Women's programs were far stronger than the Men's programs in Basketball.

I am not sure we are "light years" ahead in Basketball as we had, stronger programs in the late 1990s and the 2000s. You had LSU and Miss State make a final four, Arkansas make several FF with National Title, UK had 2 National Titles, and then Florida's back to back Titles. Granted, I agree that our facilities and money spent on Basketball is better, we just haven't done as well in March (underachieved). Tennessee is a big part of that underachievement but that was kind of expected with Rick Barnes. To be fair to Barnes, I think his teams get overhyped because they come out of the gate strong but if you really analyze the team, they are usually not fully complete teams and probably don't deserve to be in top 5-10 rankings or have those expectations.

However, Men's Basketball is definitely no where near the strength of Women's Basketball. SEC Women have history and reputation similar to the ACC in Men's Basketball. Right now, South Carolina is 31-0 and a dominate #1. LSU is a top 5 team. Tennessee Lady Vols aren't great but they are ranked. Georgia, Texas A&M, Auburn, Vandy, and Miss State all have multiple Final Fours and have played in or won National Titles.

Even on Wikipedia, the SEC is referred to as historically the strongest or one of the strongest leagues in Women's Basketball. They don't say that about the Men.

I'm going to disagree with you because SEC basketball was historically KY and you had certain teams have incredible years like Arkansas, Miss State and of course Florida had a run but now half the league is dangerous.

No one in the country can go in and play Bama, Tenn (when healthy), KY, Auburn, aTM, Mizzou and Arkansas and just assume they are going to win. Everyone one of those teams is capable of beating you and Vandy and Miss State aren't far behind.

The SEC is officially a basketball league and we have never been that in my lifetime.

Hockey. The north will always have that I guess.

Field Hockey and Lacross also.

I don't really see those catching on in the south as there just isn't room on the playing fields with all the sport's pressure.

Agreed. While the NHL has done well in the South an draws huge crowds, here in Tampa the Lightning are always sold out, I just don't see it ever developing at the grassroots through HS levels. If you look at NHL rosters, there's a reason all the players are from Canada, Northern US states or Northern/Central Europe.

I couldn’t tell you where the nearest ice rink is, or the last time any body of water has frozen thick enough to skate on around here.

But UGA won some kind of hockey national championship last year. It’s not NCAA though

I get what you are saying, I would say in the tournament that goes from mid-March to April and has 68 teams, the SEC really hasn't improved that much from its 1990-2010 or so performance. However, from a regular season performance, I agree.

We kicked Kentucky’s ass in 1966.
