Gunsmoke is my all-time favorite tv series but I hated Chester. Dennis Weaver isn't my favorite to start with but everything about that character made me ill, especially the "Meester Deelun" bullshit and the stiff leg.

If he hadn't been replaced by Quint and then Festus, I would never have watched that show.

Neither Chester or Festus would have been near as good to me if not for playing off of Doc.

Oh, what I'd give for one more season of Gunsmoke at its height, which IMO was at they very end.

The writing and acting were spectacular. Ken Curtis was absolutely incredible.

Ken Curtis was in so many things most people don't know about. Gunsmoke episodes where he wasn't Festus. Episode where he was Festus but kind of a bad guy.
