Your top movies of 2021

Yeah for sure. But at the same time I know when I was 15 I would absolutely been all about a 25 year old girl. Right around that age actually I had a huge crush on my first year English teacher and she was probably just under 25. I wish I had something going with that teacher!
So you like older women?

Maybe PTA made the film to show how girls get a pass when they seduce a "child".

Like if you told your high school buddy that 20 year-old Lisa reached into your fly for a couple of strokes, and your buddy replied, "wow, she did that?" Whereas, when 20 year-old Jimmy reaches inside sweet sixteen Gracie's panties, most might say, "Holy shit, call the cops."

Again…

if a 25 year old dude shows a 15 year old girl his junk, and they kiss, he is a monster and doesn’t even survive prison.

It is an age thing and a maturity thing. Not a guy/girl thing.

Yeah if a 25 year old guy did that to a 15 year old girl that wouldn't be cool. But it was a 25 year old girl and a 15 year old guy so it was fine.

2021 movies I have seen ( in no particular order)…

Don’t Look Up
Nobody
Spiderman
Eternals
Dune
Last Duel
Matrix
Infinite
Unforgivable
Many Saints of Newark
Quiet Place II
Suicide Squad
Shang Chi and the Ten Rings

I think that is everything…

My top 5…

Spiderman
Unforgivable
Dune
Nobody
Don’t Look Up

that is a sorry-ass top 5
Just saw Power of the Dog. Much better than I was expecting. Not as “fun” as my top 5 here, but certainly a better “film”. I could defend putting it at the very top of my list just as easily as I could defend leaving it off entirely.

My biggest complaint about Power of the Dog was the score. As my Wife described it, "I kept expecting somebody to get murdered". It didn't register with me that way until she mentioned it about 2/3s of the way through but it did have a bit of an anxiety inducing effect. And maybe that's what they were going for?

I didn’t notice the score. Trying to remember it now that you mention it, and nothing is coming to mind.

As for your expectation…

Well…

I think she meant a more dramatic, more clear murder. Knife in the chest type of thing. I thought the subtlety of the poisoning was WAY more unsettling.

I think if that happened, the movie would have been completely different. I really liked that they never spelled out anyone’s motivations for anything they did.

Why did George marry Rose?
Why was Phil such a dick? (Suppressed homosexuality?)
Why did Phil play his banjo when Rose was practicing? (Distracting her, or trying to extend an olive branch?
Why did Phil rub that cloth all over his body?
Why did Phil take Pete under his wing? (Father/son? Sexual attraction? Setting him up for murder?)
Why did Rose give away all the pelts? (Just to fuck with Phil?)
Why did Rose drink? (Morning her first husband? Felt imprisoned in this new family? Having a psychopath son?)
Why did Rose marry George? (Love? Loneliness?)

No doubt. You can reasonably come up with multiple answers for each of those questions. AND... those characters may have had multiple reasons for some/all of those decisions.

Should probably mention A Quiet Place 2. I have some problems with it, but it is still pretty good.

I saw this one early in the year and basically completely forgot about it. I listed it in my list of ‘21 movies I saw, but it was a quick removal from my top 5.

Power of the Dog
Spiderman
Unforgivable
Nobody
Don’t Look Up

Having slept on Power of the Dog, I have decided that it is now my favorite movie of the year so far. Again, not necessarily a “fun” movie, but the most impactful.

It's a well made movie that has a few pacing and story issues, but it is a solid entry in the series.

Of these, I have not seen Power of the Dog or Unforgivable yet. I did not care for Don't Look Up, I felt that it wasted the acting chops of its cast with going too satirical. I also didn't find it overly funny, which (to me) felt like it was trying to go for.

Nobody was ok, but it's a movie I have seen time and again. I didn't find anything about it impressive.

Spiderman was a fun movie, but it had a bunch of silly holes and dumb plot devices too. Again, it was super fun and had a ton of fan service, but movie-wise, it left a lot to be desired in my opinion.

As for myself, I am hard pressed to find too many I really cared enough about this year. I didn't think there were too many good ones. Again, I thought No Time To Die was pretty decent, but I don't recall Spectre and a lot of the movie has to do with that, so there could be glaring holes I missed.

The Last Duel was ok, but I felt it dragged and the different stories from different perspectives threw the pacing off a bit.

A lot of disappointments this year. Shang-Chi, Matrix Resurrections, Old, Antlers, Last Night in Soho, Malignant, Halloween Kills, The Conjuring 3, etc....

I don’t disagree with any of your critiques of my “top 5”. This has just been a piss poor year for movies.

If you see Unforgivable, understand that the movie itself is somewhat “meh”. But Bullock’s performance makes it a worthy watch. She really was very good in it.
