The 90's was the best decade ever

The exact date range is debated. Some say mid 80's to mid-90's. Some say 90's. Personally, I consider 1992-1999 as the golden age.

Before 1992, rap was predominantly local to urban metropolitan areas and the vast majority of those who are considered "golden age" rappers (like Rakim, KRS-One, Slick Rick) before 1992 were all out of New York City. Dr. Dre's 1992 "The Chronic" opened up rap to national appeal that covered all racial ethnicities. Once that dam was broken, a huge wave of musical creativity from all pockets of the country flooded the whole nation. In 2000, Eminem dropped his second album that became immensely popular and subsequently & inadvertently pushed rap into mainstream pop - which is why the golden age stopped at 1999.

I don't know if I have ever listened to a rap song beginning to end. Possible exception with Gangsta's Paradise.

I would say late 80's that Straight out of Compton blew it up to main stream. I started listening in 87/88 to Beastie Boys, Ice-T, and others

It's cool. No music is for everyone.

NWA & Ice-T did not resonate nationally; it wasn't very relatable to or groovy with the non-urban population. Yes, it resonated among urban populations beyond LA, but not in suburban or rural areas like The Chronic did.

Beastie Boys did resonate nationally, but they were also considered rock by many. In fact, if you remember the music video for "No Sleep Til Brooklyn", they actually posed as a rock group themselves to gain acceptance.

NWA was everywhere, and I grew up in a rural area down South. So was Run DMC (even before they did Walk This Way), Public Enemy, LL Cool J, etc

I grew up in Oshkosh, WI. I was the only one I knew who liked rap until 1992. So it sounds like the south was digging it earlier than the white north was, but that doesn't negate my point that rap didn't blow up nationally until 1992.

And personally, prior to 1992 I related to & dug 2 Live Crew much more than NWA.

Phones with cords, tube TVs, no internet and a bunch of worthless hippie boomers. Hard pass

Best cars, best music, people got along, country was united, actual customer service and Millennials didn't exist.

Best time evah.

I’ll give you music, but the rest, nah. They didn’t even have satellite radio back then. Millennials are the best generation to ever exist and it ain’t particularly close
